Will Captain Marvel 2019 Movie Cater to Social Justice Rhetoric?
When people say things like “this is social justice propaganda,” I’m not sure what that even means. The only thing we know about Captain Marvel is that it is led by a woman playing a classic female role. That’s it. Her personality, from what we can tell, is consistent from the comics and the animated universe. Therefore, the questions about the film having some agenda are only because it’s about a woman. It’s at least consistent, and the same was charged against Black Panther before and after it came out, and that wasn’t some movie only made with an agenda. It did its job of telling the story of T’Challa and Wakanda and fulfilled its purpose...
Looking Forward to Entertainment
Also, I go to be entertained by Marvel movies, not to judge political subtext. There is enough bombarding us everywhere that we truly need an outlet that isn’t all about the outrage we’re feeling as a nation. The entire superhero genre, in my opinion, is about social justice, equality, acceptance, and the necessary balance between the light and dark within all of us. The movies appeal to our better selves, expecting us to find the right path inside to a brighter future. Essentially, you pull from movies what you want or need—nobody else may see that the cloak in Dr. Strange is the embodiment of the warmth of human kindness and sarcasm off the rack! But after my countless watchings, I realized that’s what it represented to me—blind intellect Dr. Strange can’t exist without compassion and kindness. It is as much a weapon against evil as a fiery sword, wooden stake, or universe-bending mind control.
The Character’s Evolution
The character isn’t new; she has been around since 1967. She was Miss Marvel back then. She has had a bunch of other names over the years. She is the best possible character to introduce something like the Kree-Scrull war. She is a great choice to become a semi-central character in the next few phases. It is, in fact, a great idea to include a major female character into the MCU for marketing reasons. If you think that makes Captain Marvel a social justice movie, then your definition of the phrase is so out of touch with reality then there is no point in discussing it.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the movie is about a character who has been around for decades and has a rich history. The inclusion of a leading female character in such a prominent position can only be seen as a positive step. Whether or not it serves as a vehicle for social justice rhetoric will depend on the execution and the messages within the film. Fans and moviegoers alike will be closely watching to see how the story unfolds and whether it truly lives up to its potential to address important social issues.
