Why I Don’t See Movies Anymore and Other Truths Behind Movie Viewing Habits
Introduction
From blockbusters to indie films, movies are a global phenomenon that captivate audiences worldwide. However, not everyone finds a place for them in their personal leisure time. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind not watching movies, drawing from personal experiences and broader perspectives.
Why I Don’t Watch Movies
As mentioned, even amongst close friends, I am one of the few who do not watch movies frequently. This is not to say I dislike movies entirely, but my viewing habits have certainly diminished over the years. Gone are the days when I would watch an average of ten movies a week. The reasons behind my reduced interest are several:
1. Movies as Over-exaggerated Stories
I often view movies as overly dramatic and unrealistic portrayals of events. For instance, scenes where the hero suddenly starts dancing in the middle of the street, then the crowd joins, and they all dance together, seem absurd to me. It is hard to fathom such depictions of reality.
2. Cringe and Unrealistic Plots
Another aspect that turns me off from movies is the unrealistic and cringe-worthy content. I find it difficult to accept scenarios where a hero, despite numerous injuries, stabbings, and fractures, can fight off dozens of enemies and be completely fine within a short span without any visible scars or deformities. Moreover, the unrealistic ending where they all live happily ever after leaves me unimpressed.
3. Difficulty in Sustained Viewing
Sitting still in front of the screen for an extended period is a challenge for me. While movies might work well for binge-watching, my patience is more suited to short snippets of content rather than lengthy viewing sessions. Random glimpses of movies on TV have satisfied my curiosity over time, rather than full-length films.
4. Family Entertainment and Movie Viewing
As a platform for family entertainment, movies are not as effective as they once were. Sharing movie-watching time can be a luxury, especially with the advent of individual viewing experiences through streaming services. The companionship and shared experience that movies promise are not always feasible, making them less appealing.
5. Reluctance to Watch, But Appreciation for Certain Content
While I may not regularly watch movies, I still appreciate certain content. During my recent post-NEET break, I enjoyed watching six movies, five from the Conjuring and Annabelle series. I also have some friends’ recommendations to look forward to, indicating that my interest can be rekindled with the right content.
Conclusion
Though I am not a die-hard movie enthusiast, my personal experiences and observations indicate that various elements can influence the viewing habits of individuals. What resonates with one person may not with another, and that is perfectly fine. The key is to find what fits your personal preferences and leisure time.
