Why Conservatives Believe in Traditional Marriage Definitions and the Real Issue of Control
I probably qualify as a 'conservative.' When it comes to homosexuality, I see it as a harmful and self-destructive behavior. The negative impacts extend beyond the individual to societal well-being, including reduced birth rates and higher rates of deadly STDs, HPV cancers, and intestinal parasites. However, being conservative or liberal does not always equate to 'fewer laws' - the purpose of government is to serve the people and maintain cultural and moral standards.
Risk Awareness and Morality
It's concerning to see my best friend engaging in risky behavior without any warnings. As a friend, it's my responsibility to inform them about the potential dangers. I would be complicit in their self-destruction if I remained silent or ignored these harmful behaviors. The concern for the health and morality of the nation is fundamental in conservative beliefs.
Legally Clarifying Relationships vs. Marriage
We have no problem with any two or more people legally clarifying their relationship through a contract. My two spinster sisters have been roommates for decades and should have all of the legal rights of hospital visitation, insurance, and co-owning of property as married couples do. However, the term 'marriage' has deep religious and cultural significance, traditionally defined as the union between a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation. The objection to 'gay marriage' is not about the legal rights it might bring, but preserving the traditional definition of marriage for its intended purpose.
The Supremacy of Traditional Marriage
The concept of same-sex 'marriage' is not so much about control as it is about the very definition of marriage. Twenty-eight out of America's fifty states have constitutionally defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The current circumstance in all fifty states is a result of the US Supreme Court overstepping its power. These judges forced a redefinition of marriage, thereby undermining the traditional definition and values.
Control and Cultural Acceptance
It is the true control freaks who wish to force acceptance of homosexuality, same-sex 'marriage,' transgenderism, and other deviant behaviors using the threat of legal penalties. This overreach of the judiciary undermines the traditional values and moral standards that have been upheld for generations. The real issue of control is about preserving these traditional values and allowing the public to decide their own beliefs and behaviors without governmental coercion.
Conclusion
While there are valid concerns about legal rights and definitions, the primary issue is the preservation of traditional marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The efforts to redefine marriage are not about control but about imposing a certain view of society onto the public. As conservatives, we believe in maintaining the integrity of the traditional values and definitions that have sustained our cultural and moral standards.
