Why Childhood Movies Lose Their Magic When Watched as an Adult
Why Childhood Movies Lose Their Magic When Watched as an Adult
Have you ever found yourself revisiting a cherished movie from your childhood only to be disappointed? This experience is familiar to many, and it raises an intriguing question: Why do some of our beloved films from the past lose their charm as we grow up? There are several reasons behind this phenomenon, ranging from the shifting sensibilities and perspectives of adulthood to the realization of lesser-known facts about the making of these films.
Smoking in 'The Mask' (1994)
One such example is the 1994 cult classic The Mask, which featured Jim Carrey. I never realized the extent of smoking within the film until I watched it as an adult. Everyone was lighting up, which was quite confronting considering that the movie was made in the early 1990s, a time when smoking wasn't as heavily scrutinized. The normalized portrayal of smoking in this movie can be off-putting for adults, especially those who may be more sensitive to such content.
The Entire Milo O'Toole Film
Another example is the entire Milo O'Toole film, which I watched countless times as a child. Learning that the Japanese release of the film is slightly different and discovering the animal cruelty that took place on set destroyed my enjoyment of the movie. As an adult, we can witness the dark underbelly of the film industry and how it can impact the overall viewing experience.
Monty Python's 'The Meaning of Life' (1983)
The Meaning of Life was a film I used to love as a child. However, as an adult, I found the sheer number of songs in the film tedious. Songs that were great for a ten-year-old are not as appealing to someone in their thirties or beyond. This is a clear example of how nostalgia and enjoyment can be age-specific.
'Airplane!' (1980)
'Airplane!' was a 1980 film both critically and commercially successful. It was a parody of disaster films, which were popular in the 1970s, particularly the Airport series. While it was a hilarious and groundbreaking film in its time, it is difficult to watch it now due to dated jokes and humor. As adults, we are more discerning about what we find amusing, and it’s harder to enjoy what was cutting-edge in 1980.
Pinocchio (1940)
As someone raised in a strict household, I remember the only movie I saw as a child being Pinocchio in the theater. As an adult, I find it quite dull. The simplicity and even the pacing of the film can be tiresome, which might not have been as apparent during my childhood, when simpler storytelling was more appealing.
Zombie and Monster Movies
Another category of movies that suffer from this phenomenon are Zombie or monster movies like I Walked with a Zombie or films with former wrestler Tor Johnson. These films, particularly those made in black and white, often feature unrealistic acting and unrealistic monster movements. The undeniable cheesiness of these films can be off-putting when viewed from an adult perspective, where expectations are higher and the craft of filmmaking is more discernible.
Lastly, giant bug horror/Sci-Fi films like Them!, Tarantula, and The Deadly Mantis can be scarier when watched as a child but seem more obvious in their flaws as an adult. The poor quality of special effects and the outdated technology used can make it clear how the films were constructed, which can take away from the scares and excitement that made them memorable in childhood.
Ultimately, revisiting these films as an adult can be a poignant experience, as it brings to light the changes that occur in our tastes and perspectives over time. While these movies may not hold up as well in adulthood, they remain cherished for the memories and the joy they brought during our formative years.
