Why Chicago Held So Close to My Heart Despite the Challenges

I never truly gave up on living in Chicago, despite the challenges that come with its weather and urban environment. Chicago, often considered the Windy City, possesses a unique blend of culture, history, and charm. However, various factors led me to reconsider my stay in the city, including personal losses, changing family dynamics, and the physical impact of aging. This article delves into the reasons behind my moving experiences, reflecting on both the love and the pain associated with living in such an iconic city.

Chicago: A Double-Edged City

Chicago is a vast metropolis with much to offer in terms of culture, arts, and entertainment. Despite the presence of poor areas on the south side, the city remains my home in both a literal and figurative sense. While the weather, especially during the cold months, can be a significant burden, the city’s cultural richness and historical significance make it irreplaceable for me.

Moving back to visit my parents' grave and relishing in the city's vibrant culture remains one of my cherished activities. However, as I age, my body has developed conditions like arthritis and rheumatism, making the colder weather particularly challenging. Doctors and exercise help manage the discomfort, but the connection to the city remains strong.

The Weight of Loss and Transitions

One of the most profound relocations was fueled by the loss of a close friend—a friend who had been more of a family member to me. The reminders of shared times and memories were too painful to bear. When I did return, the majority of my family members had moved on, leading to a sense of isolation and emptiness. Visiting the city, though now more challenging due to the colder weather, remains an essential part of my life.

Personal and Professional Journeys

My story of leaving Chicago began in a different era, with me completing law school in 1975. I moved to Portland, Oregon, for a new adventure, leaving behind an unhappy climate. The move, facilitated by a van and a cassette of The Band, marked a significant shift in my life. Despite the end of a relationship, Portland offered a new start and a chance to explore a different lifestyle.

Around 20 years later, a different chapter began when my husband and I made the decision to leave Chicago due to a new job opportunity in healthcare. The move to Dallas was driven by a desire to support his career advancement in the highly-rated hospital there. Chicago's weather, high taxes, and heavy traffic were among the reasons, but the main factor was his professional growth and happiness.

A City of Memories and Growth

Despite the distance, Chicago continues to hold a special place in my heart. Its development into a bustling, vibrant downtown area makes me wish I could live closer. Reflections on the past make me appreciate the city more, and the experiences of growing up there have left an indelible mark on my life. The city is a constant source of joy, comfort, and sometimes, annoyance, but its role in my life has been pivotal.
