Why Certain Movies Leave a Bad Taste in the Overall Movie Experience
As film enthusiasts, it's inevitable that we come across movies that fail to meet our expectations and leave us with a bad taste. This article will explore some of the most disappointing movies of recent times and why they fall short of our standards.
Uncharted - A Missed Opportunity
Earlier this year, I took my younger son to see Uncharted. While it's unlikely to receive Oscar consideration, the movie was not a total disappointment. However, it was bland and over-the-top to a certain extent. The appeal to adults or older teens is limited, mainly due to the quality of dialogue between the characters played by Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. Without their spirited banter, the movie might have been completely unwatchable.
The Arrival - A True Disappointment
Another film that fell short of expectations was The Arrival. Initially, I was looking forward to a great extraterrestrial movie based on the early reviews. However, it turned out to be 2 hours of unwatchable dross. The aliens in the movie were barely visible, and the story, which revolved around a dead child, was convoluted and distracting. To be honest, I hated every minute of it!
Svengoolie’s Old Sci-Fi Classics - A Nostalgic Letdown
On a recent evening, I watched some of the cheesy science fiction movies aired on METV's Svengoolie show. These films were produced in the 50s and 60s and are in black and white, with cheap and brainless special effects. It was a letdown to see how far the industry has come since then, considering the advancements in technology and storytelling.
Music - The Worst Film of 2021
Music, released in 2021, was reportedly the worst film of the year. It is not surprising that the protagonists turned to music in their quest to deal with the world's problems. While the film may become a classic in the bad film genre, at the time of release, it was a significant disappointment. The story was weak, and the acting was subpar, making it a complete waste of time.
The Babadook - A Miss Understood Film
The Babadook was a film that received widespread acclaim. With an RT score of 98% over 216 reviews, I was expecting a truly scary experience. However, while the film was well made and original, with great acting and direction, I didn't find it particularly scary. Director Jennifer Kent's debut feature film was intended to be a deep, heartfelt psychological horror film with meaning, but I found it to be more of an adult drama than a scare fest.
The Avengers (2012) - A Waste of Resources
Another significant disappointment was The Avengers from 2012. I was never a comic book fan, and while I loved Batman and enjoyed the old Adam West movies, the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, and the Nolan "Knight Trilogy," The Avengers felt like an unnecessary and over-saturated entry into the summer blockbuster market. The movie focused heavily on CGI, with little substance beyond explosions and witty quips. It was a waste of time and resources, and there were instances when I felt the need to leave the theater early.
Conclusion
While every film industry has its share of disappointments, these movies stand out for their poor quality and lack of substance. It's important for filmmakers to strive for more than just flashy effects and catchy quips. The entertainment industry must focus on delivering high-quality content that resonates with audiences and stands the test of time. Finding these films once again brings to light the importance of thorough review and selection processes, and the power of audience feedback in shaping the landscape of cinema.
