Why Are Ghibli Movies So Good?

The Enchanting World of Ghibli

On a warm Sunday in mid-2017, a 13-year-old in southern India was uncharacteristically happy. Something magical had moved him, though he couldn't explain it. The film that brought him such joy was Spirited Away. Four years later, after experiencing most of Studio Ghibli's films, I believe I have some answers.

Magic in the Mundane

Most Studio Ghibli films are set in fantastical worlds filled with witches, spirits, and otherworldly entities. However, even the more grounded films like Moonlight Pond feel surreal and magical. The added magic, such as the flying scenes in Whisper of the Heart or the surreal animation style in Tale of Princess Kaguya, which could alienate us from the characters, instead connect with us more effectively than realistic elements could.

A Prime Example: The Pineapple Scene in Only Yesterday

The excitement and wonder on the family's faces as they encounter a pineapple is a perfect example of magical realism. This is the kind of awe we feel when trying something new, especially a surprising or exotic food. If this isn't magical, what is?

Editing and Story Structure

Many films with great storylines can become unbearable due to rushed pacing or poor scene transitions. Even Tales from Earthsea fails in this regard. In contrast, Studio Ghibli films offer a lot of breathing space, allowing the plot to flow naturally. It's like being on a calm river, paddling your boat along the beautiful stream of the plot. The journey is made more beautiful by music and animation.

Music and Animation

With one of the highest animation budgets in Japan, every frame of a Ghibli movie is a work of art. Films like Howl's Moving Castle and Grave of the Fireflies showcase breathtaking hand-drawn animation. The music, composed by Joe Hisaishi, is another masterpiece. The soundtrack of Spirited Away is especially moving. The first two notes of "One Summer's Day" immediately transport you to the entire journey of Chihiro.

Brilliant Character Designs and More

While the list of what makes Ghibli films unique could go on and on, there are a few standout elements. Excellent character designs and beautifully fleshed-out characters are just the beginning. Emotional depth, memorable moments, and a timeless quality contribute to the enduring appeal of Ghibli's creations. Absolute masterpieces have come out of the minds of Studio Ghibli, so if you haven't checked out their films, do your inner child a favor and watch one of their films—except the new one; that one was a real letdown.
