What to Do When the Shoplifting Alarm Sounds: A Personal Experience

Have you ever encountered a shoplifting alarm while shopping, only to continue on your way without addressing it? This experience can be a bit confusing and even frustrating. In this article, I will share my personal experiences and advice on what to do when the alarm sounds.

Ignorance is Bliss

On a recent shopping trip, the shoplifting alarm sounded as I was leaving a store. Out of sight, out of mind - or so I thought. I barely heard it and didn't register that I might have set off an alarm. I continued on my way, confident that I didn't take anything. It wasn't until I got home and noticed that the anti-theft device wasn't removed from my newly purchased purse that I realized something was amiss. However, dealing with the store staff at that point felt like too much hassle.

Why Ignoring the Alarm Isn't Always the Best Option

It's important to address the alarm if it sounds, even if you feel confident you haven't taken anything. In most cases, staff members will come over and apologize, and you can leave without any further issues. As I have learned, simply continuing on your way without addressing the alarm can lead to complications in the future.

A Persistent Issue with Smartphones

My situation with a smartphone that triggered the alarms was unique. I had a smart phone that would set off security alarms almost every time. This issue took me some time to figure out, but once I did, I had a simple solution: leave the device in my bag and avoid areas with security cameras. Most of the time, even when the alarm sounds, employees don't care. This is especially true in places like Wal-Mart, where simply ignoring the alarm and proceeding may be easier than dealing with greeters and security personnel.

Addressing the Problem If Ignored

However, there are instances where addressing the alarm is necessary, such as when you've bought something with an anti-theft device that needs to be removed. In the past, when my daughter’s dress had a magnetic tag that couldn't be removed without damaging the dress, I had no choice but to rip the dress and sew it back together. While this wasn't ideal, I was able to return to the store to have the staff remove the device before heading to my destination. On another occasion, when shopping for my son, the alarm sounded because the tag was still on the shirt. After rushing home and finding the tag, I had to return to the store to have it removed. This experience taught me that addressing the alarm promptly is not only courteous but also practical.

Prevent Future Issues

Now, when the alarm sounds, I stop and check to make sure I haven't taken anything. This simple step can prevent future issues and save time. It's never a good idea to ignore an alarm, as the complications can accumulate over time, as I've experienced personally.

In conclusion, while it may be tempting to continue on your way when a shoplifting alarm sounds, it's better to address it. Whether it's dealing with a persistent alarm from a smartphone or addressing an anti-theft device, taking the time to address the issue can save you hassle and time in the long run. Remember, a little patience and a few extra minutes can make a big difference in your shopping experience.
