Unyielding Temptations: My Kitchen Kryptonites and Overcoming Weaknesses

Ever wondered what drives a cooking enthusiast like myself to their kitchen kryptonite?

Spaghetti, freshly made with my homemade sauce, or my mother's traditional turkey stuffing - these simple yet exquisite dishes are my ultimate temptations. I love the process of preparing them, but I have to admit - mastering baking and desserts is a whole different level of challenge. If cooking and food preparations were like martial arts, then baking and desserts would undoubtedly be my weakness.

Baking and Desserts: The Achilles' Heel

While I can handle anything that involves the stove or grill, my experience with making desserts and pastries, especially those requiring the oven, is quite limited. There's just something about kneading dough, cutting lard, or rolling out a pie crust that intimidates me. It’s a process that adds another dimension of difficulty, and rather than tackling it head-on, I often resort to using pre-made products from the supermarket freezer.

Occasionally, I do step up and try something more complicated, like making dough for mo-mos or dumplings for a sleepover. With these, the reasoning is simple – it's all about impressing my daughter and her friends. The exotic meats, like yak or bison, while a bit challenging, are a fun addition that gets the conversation going. However, even with such a clear goal, I still find the process of rolling out the dough a daunting task, and the end result is often nothing short of a culinary masterpiece, according to others.

Personal Culinary Struggles: From Cilantro to Tamarind

When it comes to personal culinary challenges, cilantro has always been a tough nut to crack. As one of the 18 percent genetically predisposed to find the herb tasting like Dial soap, it has never been a favorite. However, after a decade of living in Mexico, I’ve learned to accept it, if not enjoy it. There's a certain comfort in familiarizing oneself with local ingredients, and cilantro is one such ingredient.

Tamarind is another one of my kryptonites. The rich, acidic flavor is delightful, especially when paired with pork, chicken, or fish. But, my relationship with tamarind is complicated, largely due to the tedious task of removing the pits. It's a laborious process that I've always found rather cumbersome. Unfortunately, my landlord, a professional chef, simply leaves the pits in and lets customers deal with the inconvenience, much to my frustration.

The Ultimate Temptation: Peanut Butter and Berries

Peanut butter is my ultimate kitchen kryptonite – not only is it irresistibly delicious, but it's also a potential trigger for binge eating. A spoonful of peanut butter alternated with strawberry jam, followed by a cold glass of milk – it's a combination that's almost too good to be true. This trifecta is not only my weakness but also a serious challenge that I must resist.

In conclusion, while cooking has become a joy, certain areas remain a continuous source of fascination and frustration. Each experience, from mastering garlic to conquering the art of rolling out dough, is a part of the journey to becoming a more versatile cook. It's these moments of struggle and triumph that make the journey of cooking so rewarding.
