Understanding the Purpose of Adversity in Our Lives

Why does God seem to torture us with difficulties in our lives, especially when we seek him? Conversely, why do we find peace when we go against His will? This article aims to explore the reasons behind these phenomena, drawing from philosophical and religious perspectives, and how they influence our understanding of life's purpose.

Accepting Reality for Inner Peace

Our feelings of peace stem from the acceptance of who we are and the situations in which we find ourselves. Similarly to being content, this acceptance is a significant factor in finding inner peace. Seeking the perfect image of God or the ideal life based on our expectations often leads to a mountain of unattainable standards. This pursuit increases our criticism of ourselves and our dissatisfaction with our lives. In essence, our greatest advocate and critic are one and the same, ourselves.

The Role of Free Will and Responsibility

Believing in free will means acknowledging that we are responsible for our actions, regardless of any divine intervention. If God resolved all of our problems, we would lose the essence of our existence and our own agency. Additionally, life in the afterlife would lack meaning if we never experienced challenges and growth in this life. Life's complexity means that individuals often experience both fortunate and unfortunate circumstances, with people having no control over the injustices they face.

The Nature of Christianity and Atheism

Contrasting religious beliefs with non-religious viewpoints, it's interesting to explore the perspectives of both groups. Christians, despite their flaws, tend to have more compassion and understanding for others. On the other hand, atheistic beliefs often stem from the desire for freedom and a lack of consequences for one's actions. People who choose atheism frequently want to do whatever they want without fear of facing repercussions, which is why they fear and hate the concept of God. Because an omnipotent being would hold everyone accountable for their actions.

The True Nature of Adversity

What do we see when we look outside ourselves? Are there instances where we see profound suffering and need, or only comfortable situations? Let's take a look through the eyes of various individuals:

A first responder or healthcare provider, such as an EMT, might see the impossible tasks of saving lives and the reality of losing those we care about. A person in Africa may witness the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its tragic misconceptions, such as the harmful belief that having sex with a virgin can cure AIDS. In the United States, one may meet homeless veterans struggling to find a support system, or witness the suffering of children with terminal illnesses. Or perhaps one has experienced firsthand the aftermath of a blizzard, where the reality of critical situations reminds us of the fragility of life.

After contemplating these scenarios, what are the choices we face?

God does not exist. God is evil.

It is worth noting that even in dire circumstances, individuals of faith often find solace and purpose in their belief. The ICU ward of a children's hospital is a stark contrast to what one might expect. People who are in foxholes (high-stress situations) often have faith, but finding a Christian in an ICU ward is less common due to the obvious suffering.

Conclusion

Understanding the purpose of adversity in our lives can be a journey of reflection and acceptance. By embracing reality and the challenges that come with it, we find a deeper sense of purpose and peace. Whether we choose to believe in a higher power or not, the experiences of life shape us and provide meaning beyond what we can control.
