Understanding the Causes of Spiritual Death: A Comprehensive Guide
Have you ever wondered what causes spiritual death? In the world of belief and faith, understanding the concept of spiritual death is crucial. This article delves into the causes that lead to the separation of our souls from God. Let's explore these causes and gain insights into the path to eternal life.
Sin and the Path to Spiritual Death
James 1:13–15 in the Bible states:
When under trial let no one say: ‘I am being tried by God.’ For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone. But each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire. Then the desire when it has become fertile gives birth to sin in turn sin when it has been carried out brings forth death.
These verses clearly indicate that sin, or disobedience to God, is the direct cause of spiritual death. When we sin, we alienate ourselves from God, losing our friendship and connection with Him. However, it's important to note that it is not God who decides to separate us; rather, we do it through our actions and choices.
The Human Tripartite Nature and the Decision to Align
Each human being is a tripartite entity consisting of a spirit, a soul, and a body. The spirit allows the Holy Spirit to reach the soul, while the body (referred to as the flesh) provides a portal for the Devil to communicate with the soul. The soul holds the ultimate choice on which kingdom to align with: either the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of Darkness.
This constant struggle between the two kingdoms takes place through a daily battle of communication. The soul must decide whether to accept the life offered by the Holy Spirit or the death from the Devil. When this alignment with the Devil happens through the soul's choice, this is referred to as sin, and it leads to spiritual death. Conversely, aligning with the Holy Spirit brings about spiritual life.
Ezekiel 18 and the Concepts of Sin and Salvation
The Book of Ezekiel 18:20–24 provides further insight into the nature of sin and its consequences:
20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.
21 “But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right that person will surely live; they will not die. 22 None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done they will live. 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live? 24 But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does will they live?
None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed they will die.
In these verses, the importance of turning away from sin and choosing the path of righteousness is emphasized. The sovereignty of God in controlling the outcomes of human actions is also highlighted, showing that He does not desire the death of the wicked but rather a change in their ways.
The Call to Existence and Change
The human soul, once separated from God, loses its connection to life, much like a fish loses its life when it moves from water to land. Therefore, understanding the causes of spiritual death is crucial for those seeking eternal life.
Actions that can lead to spiritual death also include:
Harassment and judgment of others not guided by divine wisdom. Perpetuation of sin through hate and discrimination. Blind judgment of others without the necessary understanding and knowledge. Discrimination of sexuality and body shaming.By recognizing these behaviors, individuals can work towards aligning their souls with God, avoiding the path of spiritual death and choosing the life-giving path of the Holy Spirit.
