It is a commonly accepted notion that American soldiers are among the most physically fit and conditioned individuals in the world. However, gauging the strength and conditioning of an average American soldier is not a straightforward task. This article explores the physical capabilities of these soldiers and what differentiates them from their peers in the civilian world.

Variables in Strength and Conditioning

When considering the physical prowess of an average American soldier, it is essential to take into account the various roles and missions they undertake. What is considered 'average' for an infantryman is likely to vary significantly from what might be expected for a signals operator, mechanic, or cook. For instance, the emphasis on physical training (PT) in infantry units makes their physical conditioning more pronounced. Consequently, an infantryman would likely be more physically fit than a mechanic or a cook. Therefore, pinpointing a single standard for the 'average' soldier is quite challenging.

Physical Fitness and Training

Overall, the physical conditioning of American soldiers far surpasses that of their civilian counterparts. Military training, which includes rigorous physical conditioning as well as mental fortitude, plays a significant role in shaping the physical capabilities of soldiers. For example, during my service in the 9th Infantry (Light), 8th Infantry (Mechanized), 4th Infantry (Mechanized), 2nd Infantry (Light), and the 101st Airborne Division, I was consistently in top physical condition. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 175 pounds, I consistently performed in the upper percentiles on my PT tests. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that physical strength is only one aspect of being a soldier.

Mind Over Matter

Strength and endurance are critical factors, but mental fortitude cannot be overlooked. Endurance is the key to success in the military, and it often comes down to mental resilience. This mental toughness is what differentiates a soldier who can maintain their performance during grueling physical tasks from one who cannot. I can recall instances where I passed by bodybuilders who fell out during road marches, highlighting the fact that raw physical strength alone is not sufficient. It is the combination of both physical and mental capabilities that truly defines an average American soldier.

Comparisons with Other Military Forces

The physical capabilities of an average American soldier are notably superior to their counterparts in other military forces. Not only are American soldiers from different roles often in better shape, but they are generally younger as well. For example, when compared to the average Russian soldier, American soldiers are often stronger, in better physical condition, and typically a decade or more younger, given the age demographics in the context of conscription in Russia. Furthermore, the willingness and ability of Russian soldiers to endure combat conditions can be a variable factor.
