The Role of Vengeance and Divine Justice in Society and Religion

In reflecting on the famous line, ldquo;Vengeance is not ours but the Lordrsquo;s,rdquo; one is prompted to explore the broader themes of justice and redemption in both human and divine domains. This concept is not unique to one religion or scriptural tradition, but is common across many belief systems that emphasize the hierarchical nature of justice and the limitations of human capacity to administer true justice.

Divine and Human Justice

There are competent institutions in society that impart human justice, and on a metaphysical or spiritual level, God dispenses divine justice in this world and/or the next. The older the scripture, the more vengeful the tone towards God; more recent scripture explains it in a more mature and rational manner. Most things that happen are cause-effect actions and reactions, akin to the concept of karma. However, other things that occur can be attributed to divine justice from this world or the next, or the application of human justice through institutions, lesser offenses between humans which can be forgiven, and complex situations that are difficult to explain.

For instance, while some see the pandemic, such as COVID-19, as a punishment by God, others like myself, view it as a consequence of human actions. This perspective emphasizes the interplay between human behavior and divine reaction, highlighting the dynamic nature of justice.

Keys to a Balanced Life

The Baharsquo;i faith places a strong emphasis on maintaining a balanced life and avoiding negative actions that could lead to onersquo;s downfall. Abdu'l-Baha, in the narrative from The Hidden Words, offers insightful advice on how to lead a virtuous life. He encourages one to hear no evil, see no evil, and speak no evil, as such actions can protect one from receiving similar treatments. Similarly, one should not magnify the faults of others; instead, one should take responsibility for their own actions and not wish for the abasement of others.

The Role of Authority in Society

The Bible, specifically from the Epistle to the Romans, emphasizes the role of authority in society, derived from God. Authority is seen as a divine ordinance, and anyone who resists it resists Godrsquo;s will. Saint Paul also affirms that the ruler is a revenger to execute Godrsquo;s wrath upon those who do evil, highlighting the dual role of divine and human justice in maintaining social order.

The Limits of Human Justice

Despite the divine mandate for rulers and governments to be just, fair, and consultative, they still have limits. Baharsquo;i writings also caution against tyranny, oppression, and despotism. As per the Authoritative Writings and Guidance, the world is held firmly in the grasp of Godrsquo;s Will, and punishment is not for the sake of vengeance but for imposing a penalty for the committed offense. The focus is on societyrsquo;s right to impose punishments for the protection of its members and the existence of its societal order.

Chastisement and Redemption

The Universal House of Justice, in its notes on the Kitab-i-Aqdas, clarifies the difference between revenge and punishment. Revenge is not a right of individuals, and it is despised in the eyes of God. Punishment, on the other hand, is intended to correct and protect. The worldrsquo;s current state is, in part, a self-inflicted chastisement, a testament to humanityrsquo;s actions and the consequences that follow. Understanding and embracing this truth can lead to greater compassion and wisdom in navigating lifersquo;s myriad challenges.

In conclusion, the line ldquo;Vengeance is not ours but the Lordrsquo;srdquo; highlights the fundamental belief in the separation of human and divine justice. While human institutions play a crucial role in maintaining order, the ultimate responsibility for correction and redemption lies with a higher power. Embracing this understanding can guide individuals in leading virtuous lives and contributing to a more just and harmonious society.
