The Non-Pakistani Quirks Within

Growing up in a culturally diverse environment can often lead to a mix of traditional and modern influences. Here, I share aspects of my life that stand out as distinctly non-Pakistani, challenging the conventional norms that many around me might follow.

Writing Urdu Amidst Dominant English

I can write Urdu, a highly cherished language in Pakistan. However, despite being raised in Karachi, one of the largest and most culturally vibrant cities in Pakistan, I find that hardly anyone of my age actively writes Urdu. I believe it is due to the prevalence of the English language, which has become the dominant force in communication and media.

Disinterest in Bollywood and Cultural Showbiz

Oddly enough, I do not have the same level of interest in Bollywood movies, music, or serials. This might surprise some, as my parents were quite particular about keeping the younger generation from being exposed to what they considered to be excessive and sometimes inappropriate content. Though now I can freely enjoy what I want, that initial caution has left a lasting impact on my preferences.

Eco-Friendly Actions and Personal Hygiene

Carrying my trash around and finding littering incredibly annoying is something that sets me apart from many. Even in a city like Karachi, where the streets can be overwhelming with garbage, I still choose to pick up after myself. My eco-consciousness is not just about cleanliness but also about promoting a healthier and cleaner environment.

No Strong Affection for Conventional Pakistani Preferences

There's a stark contrast between my food preferences and what many Pakistani families enjoy. For instance, I find wedding food rather unexciting and prefer to eat at home after attending events. Similarly, rather than being a fan of spicy or sweet food, my palate leans towards milder flavors. I also find cricket, a sport deeply rooted in Pakistani culture, to be quite dull and time-consuming, which is further contradicted by my background in Karachi, a city known for its fiery food and passionate cricket fans.

Defying Traditional TV and Media Habits

My lack of interest in mainstream TV series and my friend circle's fascination with shows like Narcos, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and Sherlock further extends my unique perspective. While many use platforms like Netflix to stay updated with their favorite shows, my non-participation in this trend simply adds to the list of traits that make me stand out. This also means that I don't have a Netflix account, even though it is now a common household item in many homes.

Beyond Cultural Preferences

Beyond personal preferences and daily habits, there are broader societal views that differ significantly from the norm:

I don't take unnecessary criticism of my country lightly. Often, people tend to blame the entire nation for the actions of a few, which is not always productive or fair. My respect for both civilian and military leaders as responsible for the state of Pakistan distinguishes me from those who might strongly support one group over the other. While Urdu is a beloved language, and it's sometimes used as a national language, I find English to be more unifying and binding for Pakistanis. My belief that selecting Urdu as the national language was perhaps not the best choice remains a point of contention. Lastly, my support for the recognition of Israel and the two-state solution underscores my desire for peace and justice, setting me apart from those who are more critical or harsh in their views.

These quirky aspects of my life are not just about me; they represent a broader set of values and beliefs that align more with the globalized and modern world rather than the more traditional Pakistani ethos. Each of these points stands as a testament to the fact that individuality can often transcend cultural and national boundaries.
