A liberal said it best a few years ago. 'Laws DON'T stop or prevent crime. They are just tools the government uses to prosecute those they catch who commit crime.' This statement rings true in light of recent events, especially the San Diego shooting, which raises the question: How could such a horrific incident occur despite stringent gun control and red flag laws?

When it comes to mass shootings, it's important to understand that the individuals behind the scenes have often put a great deal of thought into their actions. They are strategic, knowing exactly how to avoid arousing suspicion, and aware that simply the presence of a 'No Guns' sign is not enough to stop them. What they need is accessibility, and unfortunately, they can often find it through illegal means.

Guns and Criminals: The Reality Behind Criminal Access to Firearms

Gun control laws are, in essence, pointless. Criminals typically get their guns illegally, either by stealing them or purchasing them from the black market. The same phenomenon occurs in other parts of the world, such as Mexico, where there is one legal gun store for citizens, yet the majority of criminals still manage to obtain their weapons. If gun control laws were so effective, wouldn't we see a significant decrease in illegal gun possession?

In fact, the majority of mass shootings happen in states with less stringent gun laws. California, for example, is considered one of the states with stricter gun control measures. Nevertheless, the recent Gilroy shooting highlighted the reality that loopholes exist. The perpetrator purchased an automatic rifle in Nevada, a state where that style of gun is legal, then drove it to California, where it was used in the tragic incident. The shooter was ultimately killed by police, leaving three people dead and many more injured. This event caused widespread terror and was classified as a terrorist act rather than a domestic crime.

The Ineffectiveness of Gun Control Laws

Laws are meant to deter crime, but they are useless against those who are determined to break them. Criminals who are intent on committing illegal acts are not swayed by the presence of laws. They will find a way to circumvent these measures, whether by illegal means or by exploiting loopholes. Even if we could stop every single instance of lawbreaking, we wouldn't be rid of crime altogether. Mental illness is complex and multifaceted; it is not the sole factor in acts of violence. Racism, socioeconomic factors, and a myriad of other influences contribute to violent behavior, but this does not excuse the criminal actions of individuals.

Our society must confront these issues head-on, recognizing that strict gun control alone is not a panacea for preventing mass shootings. We need to address the root causes of violence and work towards holistic solutions that include mental health support, community intervention, and economic empowerment. Stricter gun laws can play a role, but they cannot be relied upon as the sole solution.
