The Most Valuable Support from Law Enforcement: A Dispatchers Perspective
The Most Valuable Support from Law Enforcement: A Dispatcher's Perspective
Reflecting on my journey as a dispatcher in law enforcement, I can share a powerful story of the kindness and support provided by the police officers and dispatchers. My experiences illustrate how law enforcement professionals go beyond their duties to assist and nurture those in need, especially during challenging times.
From Inexperience to Perspective
Back in 1976, I started my career as a police officer with no background in law enforcement. At the age of 20, applying as a station cadet, I never fully considered the implications of becoming a police officer. A sergeant sent me to the Sheriff's Academy just 10 days after my 21st birthday, and I was fortunate enough to be hired based on my test scores, over suspicions that I might have cheated.
An Incident at the STOP Sign
During my early days, I was not fully aware of the rules and got a firsthand lesson from a police officer. While I made an improper left turn at a stop sign, the officer was surprisingly understanding. Explaining the mistake, the officer said, 'Well now that I’ve told you about it and you’ve been nice, I’m gonna let you go on your way. Have a nice day.' This moment taught me the importance of clear communication and respect between law enforcement and civilians.
Insight from the Dispatcher's Role
As a dispatcher, I was frequently contacted by the law enforcement officers who did a lot of very nice things for me. However, my bipolar disorder prevented me from fully appreciating the intelligence, upstanding nature, and compassion present in the police force. My illness caused me to see things in an unreliable way, often perceiving hostile intentions where there were none. This journey of self-discovery led me to reflect on the support and patience I had received from my fellow officers and dispatchers.
Receiving Treatment and Gratitude
Since receiving medical treatment, my perspective has greatly changed. I wish I could go back and thank each and every officer and dispatcher who had helped me. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the supervisors who gave me multiple chances to turn things around. While it is not ideal that I lasted 10 years, it is a testament to the patience and support provided by my colleagues. Looking at the current climate, I see people who are not seeing things clearly, duped by the media, and lacking in clarity about the risks and sacrifices made by law enforcement.
The Future of Gratitude and Awareness
To all the men and women in law enforcement, I extend my sincere thanks for your kindness and sacrifices. Please stay safe! As society progresses, there will be some who 'get it,' while others will not. However, the police will continue to protect us, and I hope to spread awareness of the invaluable support provided by law enforcement.
