Robert Abajyan, an ordinary boy from Yerevan, Armenia, faced unimaginable adversity and ultimately displayed incredible courage and heroism during a brutal conflict. His actions and sacrifice have left an indelible mark on the history and memory of the people of Artsakh. This article delves into the life and heroic death of Robert Abajyan, examining the context of his sacrifice and its impact on his community.
Background and Early Life
Robert Abajyan, born on November 16, 1996, in Yerevan, Armenia, was born into a family of five, including an older brother and two sisters. Growing up in a tight-knit Armenian community, Robert earned the name 'Kyazh Blondie' from his friends and family. He excelled academically and was enrolled in Yerevan Basic School No. 147 in 2003. After completing his education there, he continued his studies at the Yerevan State Basic Medical College, graduating in 2014 with qualifications as a dental technician.
In 2014, Robert enrolled at the Holy Theresa Medical Institute's department of dentistry. However, his life took an unexpected turn when he was conscripted into the Armenian army for compulsory military service in the second conscription of 2014. His dedication and progress led to him being promoted to the rank of junior sergeant, setting the stage for the events that would follow.
The Battle and Robert's Heroic Sacrifice
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan escalated dramatically on the night of April 1-2, 2016, when Azerbaijani forces launched a large-scale attack along the entire Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact. The attack, shelled by heavy artillery from the north-eastern direction, aimed to occupy Armenian positions.
Under the command of Captain Armenak Urfanyan, a group of six frontier forces successfully defended their positions twice, hitting one enemy tank. After unsuccessful attempts, the enemy retreated and resumed shelling. Amid the heavy bombardments, Captain Armenak Urfanyan and Kyaram Sloyan, a Yazidi-Armenian machine-gunner, were killed. Kyaram's death was even more tragic, as he was beheaded by the Azerbaijani forces, with grotesque videos and photos posted on social media.
Realizing the ammunition was running out, Robert Abajyan, who had been wounded in the leg, stepped up to take command. Sent by him to retrieve bullets, three soldiers were able to return to their position. However, the enemy managed to penetrate their defensive line, and Abajyan and his injured friend Andranik Zohrabyan retreated to a shelter.
While Zohrabyan died of hemorrhage in Abajyan's arms, the latter decided to make a devastating counter-attack. Noting the enemy's approach, Abajyan conveyed his final message to battalion commander, promising to destroy himself and several enemies with a grenade, rather than surrender. With this sacrifice, he bought valuable time for other soldiers to regroup and prepare for the upcoming battle.
Highest Honorary Title and Legacy
Robert Abajyan's actions were not in vain. After his death, his friends managed to divert the enemy, allowing other soldiers to rescue the conscripts from the surrounding area. His bravery and sacrifice earned him the highest honorary title of 'Hero of Artsakh,' making him the youngest recipient of this title in history at the tender age of 19.
The story of Robert Abajyan serves as a powerful reminder of the courage and resilience of those who fight for their homeland. His sacrifice has inspired countless young Armenians, and his name echoed in the collective memory of the Artsakh people.
