The Impact of Employment on Personal Growth and Perspective

Life changes every day, regardless of whether we are employed or not. However, for those who live consciously, the changes become more apparent. Once you start working, numerous detachments occur in your life. Over the years, the same place you once found so appealing can become frustrating. Balancing work with maintaining a sense of fun and freedom is crucial.

Freedom and Independence

I found myself experiencing a sense of freedom, not because I was constrained before, but because of the independence that came with having a job. I reflected on the statement, 'You earn now, you can decide what you choose to do,' and saw it as a chance to direct my life. While the freedom to pursue anything one desires can be misinterpreted, true independence gives you the opportunity to shape your life according to your aspirations. This freedom, however, comes with accountability, and I cherish that responsibility.

Escape and Security

The first job also marked my first escape from the life I experienced as a child. It was a turning point where I gained a profound sense of independence and security that is unmatched. It provided an escape from a home life that may not have been ideal. Through my work, I was able to escape and find solace from the challenges of my personal life.

The Shift in Perspective

However, with the onset of new responsibilities, the world I knew began to change. More and more, my future was influenced by my employer, and my freedom to control my life diminished. It was a critical lesson to learn that money should be an instrumental tool rather than a means of control.

Colleague’s Experience

A recent update from a colleague on social media recounted a new job, and a comment from my skip-level manager struck a profound chord. The manager commented, 'Your dream job/company changes once you change your job/company.' In this succinct remark lies a wealth of wisdom. There is no such thing as a 'dream' company or job, as the mindset and circumstances change over time. As humans, we always strive to achieve more and often cringe at our past jobs, viewing them as once-dreamworthy positions.

Defining a Dream Job

A 'dream job' is not about obtaining the ultimate position or environment but rather about achieving financial stability, mental strength, and becoming a better person. If you attain all these elements, you will undoubtedly experience a profound transformation in your life. Employment can be a pivotal factor in facilitating personal and professional growth, but it is essential to approach it with a balanced perspective.
