The Flawed Nature of Quora Content Review: Effective or Just an Editors Nightmare?
The Flawed Nature of Quora Content Review: Effective or Just an Editor's Nightmare?
Is Quora Content Review effective? This long-standing question is something that internet enthusiasts and content creators alike have been pondering for years. In this article, we'll delve into the effectiveness or lack thereof of Quora's Content Review process, providing a firsthand account of my experiences and the reasons behind the ongoing issues.
Unveiling the Inefficiencies of Quora Content Review
I have personally encountered numerous instances where edits made to questions marked as 'need improvement' were frequently reversioned. It's frustrating to see changes reverted due to accusations of altering the original question's meaning, even when the changes did not significantly impact the intended meaning.
Going Against the Grain of Consistency
The challenge lies in the sheer inconsistency of the content review process. While some corrections are valid and necessary, others are made for minor issues that do not alter the question's fundamental meaning. For example, I have observed instances where the use of quotation marks, the correct placement of commas, and adherence to grammatical rules have been deemed unacceptable and reverted.
Strategic Responses to Reversions
To combat the problem, adopting a strategic approach is crucial. When a question is reverted, I always provide a carefully worded but direct comment explaining why the change was incorrect. These comments serve not only as a reason to revert to the original version but also as a form of documentation for my persistence and dedication to grammatical correctness.
Sample Comments to Support Persistence
Below are some comments I have used in the past to support my arguments and maintain my changes:
Kindly revert back to the version that actually uses a full pair of quotation marks on each word being discussed. One word was only halfway there. After I inserted the missing quotation mark, I also upgraded the straight quotes to the curly/printer’s quotes. You're welcome. The grammatically correct way to treat state names and D.C. that occur after a city name in the middle of a sentence is to put a comma after the state name. See The Chicago Manual of Style and many other style guides for this convention. Please revert. Thank you. It is proper grammar to put quotation marks around a word or phrase such as “There is no such thing as being perfect” when it is being discussed within a sentence. Without the quotation marks, the grammar can be confusing. For validation of this grammar rule, please read The Chicago Manual of Style or The Elements of Style. Please revert. Thank you.Rationalizing the Process
When the code does not take proper grammar into account and reverts the question back to its previous, ungrammatical state despite my efforts, I make a grand assumption that it was the algorithm and not a sentient being making the decision. If it is a sentient being, I have no idea why they are on staff. This approach allows me to stay hopeful while maintaining a degree of professionalism in my comments.
Final Thoughts
The Quora Content Review process is undoubtedly flawed. While it does make some valid corrections, it often reverts edits that do not significantly alter the original intent or meaning of the question. The key to effective editing is to stay persistent and provide clear, well-worded reasons for your corrections. Hopefully, with time, Quora will refine its process to better serve its community of content creators and enthusiasts.
