The Essence of a Strong Product Designer

The best industrial product designers are often described as extremely lazy, economical, clever, curious, and critical. This paradoxical combination embodies their inherent drive to innovate and improve their craft. These qualities are not only beneficial but essential for achieving excellence in the field of product design. Let us delve into the reasons why.

The Principles Behind a Successful Product Designer

Lazy, not in a sense of lack of work ethic but in a strategic and productive manner, these designers aim for the most efficient solution. An example of this is the Invention of the foot-peddled chain stitch sewing machine. The designer, driven by the desire to alleviate the burden on his wife, created a machine that could perform the same task with minimal labor and material. This innovativeness extends to minimizing costs, using fewer materials, and fewer manufacturing operations.

Economical and clever, they constantly seek ways to streamline processes and reduce waste. The use of integral clips instead of screws and fewer manufacturing steps are examples of the constant search for efficiency. Mechanisms require a designer to consider numerous factors simultaneously, including ergonomics, functionality, aesthetics, and cost. For a mechanism to be effective, the designer must think about all these elements without compromise.

The curiosity of a strong product designer is relentless. They are always observing, listening, and learning from their surroundings. For instance, the mechanism for removing a cherry or olive pit could have been inspired by a gardener's post hole digger. This adaptability and the ability to draw connections across different aspects of life and work are crucial for evolving ideas and innovations.

Lastly, critical and stubborn, they are decisive and persistent in their pursuit of perfection. A designer who is not lazy or stubborn will not present the best possible design. Stubbornness in the face of critique ensures that the work continually improves until the designer is satisfied. This combination of traits ensures that a designer arrives at the best solution through continuous refinement.

My Journey as a Product Designer

As a current third-year student pursuing a degree in product design, my understanding of the field was initially vague and shallow. It wasn’t until I began working on projects and interned with a system analysis and software development firm that my comprehension of the design process truly began to take shape. The intern experience solidified my appreciation for the complexities involved in creating user-friendly, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing products.

In my opinion, the common stereotype of product design focuses too heavily on the process of sketching. However, sketches are merely a tool to convey ideas. Design, in any form, is fundamentally about storytelling. The ability to captivate and communicate the intended purpose, functionality, and end-user experience of a product is crucial. The questions to consider when designing a product are: Why do you do what you do? For whom? How? And what is the story behind your design?

Given the intense competition in the Indian market, strong technical skills are essential for an aspiring product designer. The field is dominated by individuals with a solid technical background, making it challenging to stand out by simply ideating and sketching. The path to sustaining a career as a product designer involves more than just aesthetics and sketching. Building a robust technical foundation and understanding the broader implications of design choices are critical.

For those interested in product design, it is vital to:
- Develop a deep understanding of the technical aspects of your field of choice (e.g., education and crafts).
- Research and engage with various aspects of culture, tradition, and human interaction.
- Stay current with technological advancements and digital tools.
- Envision the future and remain adaptable.
- Read widely and explore diverse topics to foster a mentally stimulating environment.

Ultimately, the design process should not only focus on the appearance but also on the functional and interactive aspects of a product. A thorough user study and market analysis are crucial for developing a product that meets both user needs and market demands.

A strong product designer recognizes their own versatility and the impact they can have on various fields. By incorporating these insights and skills, one can become a true force in the world of product design.
