The Duality of Support for Colin Kaepernick's National Anthem Protests: A Veteran's Perspective

Recent years have witnessed a significant public debate surrounding the protests initiated by former NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, during the national anthem. While some veterans and civilians strongly support his actions, others feel that his protests are disrespectful and alienating. In this article, we explore the conflicting views, especially from the perspective of a veteran who supported both Kaepernick's right to protest and why he personally disagrees with the way he chose to do it.

Support for Kaepernick's Right to Protest

There are veterans who oppose Kaepernick's methods but do not question his right to protest. As an Army veteran who served in Vietnam in 1969, I can attest to the complexity of this issue. Veterans like me recognize that Colin Kaepernick has used his platform to bring attention to issues that need addressing, such as police brutality, racial discrimination, and the treatment of veterans. The First Amendment grants the freedom of speech, which allows individuals to express their concerns and advocate for change.

Kaepernick's protest by taking a knee during the national anthem is a symbolic gesture that brings attention to the injustices faced by African Americans, especially those in the criminal justice system. He believes that taking a knee is a respectful way to highlight the issues of gun violence, racial discrimination, and the needs of veterans who may face homelessness. These are all critical issues that deserve public attention and action.

Disagreement on the Method

While I support his right to protest, I personally believe his chosen method is misguided and disrespectful. Kaepernick's use of celebrity to promote his political views through the NFL platform is controversial. Some veterans feel that such actions may alienate individuals who do not share the same viewpoints. It is understandable for people to feel disgusted and alienated when they perceive that their symbols of national pride are being treated disrespectfully.

Recent research has shown that police do not discriminate against black suspects in a way that makes them more likely to be shot under similar circumstances. A study by Harvard professor Roland Fryer in 2017 debunked the Black Lives Matter (BLM) argument regarding police bias. While this should provide some reassurance, it does not negate the need for reform in areas like criminal justice and treatment of veterans.

The publicized studies and high-profile protests by Kaepernick have led to a rise in tensions. This has unfortunately resulted in the deaths of police officers, who were targeted by individuals influenced by BLM rhetoric. I believe that Kaepernick should take responsibility for contributing to these tragic incidents. While the killers themselves bear the ultimate responsibility, Kaepernick's actions have created a significant public backlash.

Personal Experience and Reflection

As a veteran, my personal experience has led me to believe that it is essential to maintain respect for national symbols. The flag and the national anthem are important symbols of liberty and freedom. However, I also understand the complexity of the issues they represent. I have chosen to avoid watching NFL games and wearing NFL gear as a way to show my respect for these symbols, while still supporting the causes that Kaepernick advocates.

Gene Hurley has expressed similar sentiments and suggested that those who believe in their values and act on them are honorable. Kaepernick's actions may not always be popular, but he is fighting for a cause that many find important. It is essential to have such debates and ensure that all voices are heard, including those of veterans who may have different views.

In conclusion, the issue of Colin Kaepernick's protests reflects a broader, more nuanced debate. While some veterans and civilians support his right to protest, there is a division on the methods and the impact of his actions. It is crucial to engage in constructive dialogue to find common ground and work towards positive change.
