The Clowns in a Car Record: A Spectacular Circus Tradition

The record for the most clowns in a car was officially set on July 18, 2004, in Llandudno, Wales. During this event, 51 clowns managed to fit into a single Fiat Multipla. This impressive feat entered the annals of Guinness World Records and has since become a cherished memory for enthusiasts of the circus and World Records alike.

Origins and Evolution of the Clown Car Tradition

While it's easy to get caught up in the feat of fitting so many clowns into one car, it's essential to understand the history behind this quirky and entertaining spectacle. I had the privilege of working with clowns during my time in the Ringling show, and I can offer some insight into the evolution of the Clown Car tradition.

The Clown Car concept has its roots in various comedy car routines in circus history. The two most notable are the small car used by Master Clown Lou Jacobs and later performed by his protégés, and the classic "Clown Car" where multiple clowns emerge from a single vehicle. Each of these routines has its unique quirks and comedic elements, contributing to the rich tradition of clowning.

The Mystique and Trickery of the Clown Car

In my experience, the vehicle used for the Clown Car routine is not as small as it seems. It is a compact car, painted with colorful designs that make it appear slightly like a toy car. These visual cues contribute to the psychological deception, setting the stage for the real magic to unfold.

The interior of the car is gutted, painted black, and lacks any seating, leaving only an empty shell with no windows, except for a small clear spot right in front of the driver. The driver sits on a small box, positioning his face right by the hole for a clear view. This setup allows the clowns to fit inside and exit in a synchronized, theatrical manner.

Behind the Scenes: How It's Done

The actual method of the Clown Car routine is surprisingly simple, but its effectiveness relies heavily on the illusion and audience engagement. When instructed to get into the car, the clowns all stand in the reverse order of how they will exit. Once everyone is inside, the driver honks the horn, opens the door, and each clown exits one by one in a four-beat rhythm: honk, open door, exit, slam door. The routine is repeated for each of the 17 clowns, resulting in a flurry of activity that captivates the audience.

Adding to the crowd of clowns, five additional individuals (the clown policeman and road crew) are positioned just before the Car is opened, making 22 clowns ready to be chased off the track. The routine is usually accompanied by music, and each clown performs a small bit of business as they exit the car.

A Staple of Circus Circles

The Clown Car routine has been a staple of circus shows for many years. In my experience, the setup and execution of this routine require a collaborative effort and a certain level of physical flexibility. Even with the physical demands, the routine remains a favorite among performers and audiences, creating unforgettable moments of laughter and amazement.

The Clown Car record, recognized by Guinness World Records, stands as a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of clowns and their ability to entertain in the most unusual and challenging circumstances.

Conclusion

The record for the most clowns in a car remains a significant milestone in the history of circus entertainment. Through the combined efforts of performers, designers, and directors, this spectacle continues to captivate audiences, reminding us of the enduring magic of the circus.
