Supporting the Needy During Lockdown: A Personal Journey
Supporting the Needy During Lockdown: A Personal Journey
During the great lockdown, millions of people worldwide faced severe hardships, particularly in terms of food security. As a young individual with a family who took matters into our own hands, this article tells the story of how we tried to make a difference during one of the most challenging times.
Helping Migrants during their Long Walk Home
28th March 2020 was a significant day when we witnessed a large number of migrants walking back to their villages. These people were crossing the borders of Delhi and UP, and it was heartbreaking to see their struggle from our balcony. We decided to do our part and cooked food for them, ensuring they didn’t go hungry. Our local contribution included filling milk bottles, giving out biscuits, bananas, and oranges to those with young children, as well as providing stray slippers to the barefoot girls walking by.

Feeding Families Staying Behind
On the 18th day of the lockdown, my father and I learned about a group of 30-35 families who decided to stay in our local colony instead of returning to their villages. These families had no food to eat. We provided them with raw materials such as wheat flour and pulses. Thanks to the contributions of three or four of my friends, we were able to help these families. Feeding Stray Animals and Local Community
Since the start of the lockdown, my parents have been feeding stray dogs. Our area and nearby parks have approximately 25-30 strays that depend on us for daily sustenance. We also distribute cooked and uncooked rations such as rice, lentils, salt, turmeric powder, potatoes, and onions to poor families in our vicinity. Furthermore, we keep bananas and big packets of bread for the many monkeys in our area.
Conclusion and Personal Reflection
Every small gesture counts, especially during times of crisis. Sharing resources and spreading kindness can make a significant difference to those in need. This experience has taught me the importance of community support and the power of our actions, no matter how small they may seem. Together, we can help alleviate the hardships of those affected by the lockdown.
