Starting Your Acting Journey: A Guide for Teens

At age 13, many teens dream of pursuing acting. While joining your school's theater club is a great start, there's much more you can do to dive deeper into the world of acting. Let me share my insights and advice based on my own journey.

Understanding the Path to Acting

When I was your age, I spent a lot of time reading about plays and theater, and eventually, I wrote my first play by the time I was 14. I also started looking into the theater business and understood that acting is a career path that requires time and preparation. By 16, I was my first job in the theatre because I had developed valuable skills and happened to find a group that needed someone like me, willing to work cheaply.

The Importance of Education and Preparation

Many people start their acting careers later, around the age of 22 when they finish college. However, it's important to lay a solid educational foundation, as your degree can support your acting career, particularly if it's a non-acting degree. It's also critical to consider the financial aspects, as becoming an actor can be quite expensive. Many actors rely on a stable job to fund their acting pursuits.

For teens who are passionate about acting, here are some key steps to follow:

Inspiration and Practice

Read extensively on acting, and take acting classes. Books like 'Respect for Acting' by Uta Hagen can provide valuable insights. Start by exploring different acting styles and then choose a school that resonates with you. Auditing classes can also give you a better sense of the teacher and the program.

Forming an Improv Troupe

Consider forming an improv troupe with friends who share your passion. Practicing and perfecting various improv games can be both entertaining and educational. Eventually, you can put on a show. You'll learn a lot from each other, and it will be fun, too.

Take acting classes: Ensure you have a solid understanding of different acting styles before making a decision. Visit multiple schools, audit classes, and trust your instincts when choosing a program. Focus on academics: Prioritize your high school education. Good grades will open doors to a good college, and a well-paying job is essential to support your acting career. Patience is key: Take your time and do it right. It's better to take two years in acting classes than rushing into a professional acting career. Each step you take will contribute to your long-term success. Study Sanford Meisner and Wendy Alane Wright: These influential figures have much to offer in refining your craft. Subscriptions: Join Facebook groups like Talent Managers for Actors and YouTube channels like Acting Career Center for additional resources and inspiration.

Remember, you don't need to rush. Every step you take is a step closer to your dream. Take your time, learn, and enjoy the journey.
