Sequels: A Dream or a Necessity?
Sequels: A Dream or a Necessity?
When it comes to sequels, opinions vary widely. Some people are eager for the next chapter in their favorite stories, while others believe the ending should remain undisrupted. I have a specific sequel that everyone wishes would see the light of day, but the reality is far from satisfying.
The Forgotten Sequel: Awakening: Kingdoms
Many years ago, there was a game called Awakening: Kingdoms, developed by BoomZap for Big Fish Games. This unique title offered a singular and captivating experience that included intricate seek and find gameplay. What made this game stand out was its ability to weave a story experience that kept players engaged.
Unfortunately, the tale of Awakening: Kingdoms took an unforeseen turn when Big Fish Games underwent a change in ownership. This led to a heated dispute between the new management and the BoomZap team, ultimately resulting in the game's untimely abandonment. The adventure ended on a stairwell landing, with the protagonist facing a BASILISK without armor, weapons, or a clear strategy to continue the mission.
The story's abrupt end left many fans yearning for a continuation, but the possibility of a sequel seems as remote as being struck by lightning on a sunny day.
The Case Against Sequalomania
Clearly, sequels are not always a necessity. In the case of franchises like Star Wars, the original film Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) laid the foundation for the entire saga. Despite the subsequent films being well-received, many argue that they leaned more towards cash grabs than faithful continuations of the story. Similarly, the second The Godfather and The Godfather II were regarded as unnecessary additions.
The general sentiment is that sequels can often dilute the quality and essence of the original, turning it into a repetitive exercise rather than a meaningful extension of the narrative.
The Controversy of Political Content in Modern Media
Recently, there has been a significant trend in both books and movies to incorporate political messages or themes. While this can add depth to the story, it also raises concerns about indoctrination. I have grown wary of reading or watching anything that pigeonholes its message too heavily. As a result, I currently have no interest in sequels that might carry these kinds of political overtones.
However, there is one movie that I hold dear, Rise of the Guardians. Despite its relative lack of popularity, it holds a special place in my heart. I would love to see a sequel that brings back the same original cast to honor the great moral lesson that the first film imparted. Whether it's a true sequel or simply a reimagining, I hope it follows the same spellbinding adventure that captured my imagination.
As for other sequels, I'm more than happy to let them pass. If a story is meant to end, then let it do so.
