Reflections on Riverdale's Decline: Why the Show Hasn't Improved
In my opinion, Riverdale didn’t deteriorate from a good show to a bad one. What happened is that the writers started to lack direction, and instead of planning the storylines, they're making things up as they go along. This approach may work for some people, but it definitely ruins the show for others due to the poor writing. Personally, I don't get too caught up in the writing or what the characters say; all I care about is the Bughead dynamic and the intriguing storylines of each season. Some people are put off by the show's cringy moments, but I can handle it better. Others might skip or laugh at those parts, but for some, the cringe is too much to bear, and they stop watching the show altogether. That said, it's ultimately up to individual preferences and viewing habits.
Inconsistent Writing and Unexciting Storylines
When it comes to Riverdale, the writing has been inconsistent, and character development has been lacking. Take Archie, for instance. His unnecessary musical episodes and performances, along with poor character development, have detracted from the show's quality. Similarly, Josie’s character arc has been particularly underwhelming. The musical performances, like lip-syncing, have often come across as stupid. The plot lines in episodes such as Serpents versus Ghoulies, Gryphons and Gargoyles game, and The Farm were underwhelming, and the events were anticlimactic. Season three, in particular, was a letdown for me. I stuck around to see what was happening, but the disappointment was palpable.
Clarity and Credibility Issues
Another significant issue with Riverdale is the clarity of the plot and the credibility of the writing. For example, the Black Hood storyline was a confusing mess. The writers seemed to not have a clear idea of who the Black Hood should be, leading to a series of unneeded plot twists and clues. The resolution of finding out it was Hal Cooper was disappointing, and the way it was filmed was terrible. Another plot point, the Gargoyles King, is something that leaves me with more questions than answers. It’s as if the writers lost their minds, and the show has strayed far from the high school rom-com drama it once was. Adding such seemingly uninteresting elements undoubtedly made the show feel more unrealistic.
Conclusion: Time to Move On
Ultimately, Riverdale has been on the air for too long and has exhausted its prime, in my opinion. The first half of season two was the show's best, and everything since has been a decline. The idea of adding new elements to the show just to keep it going was poorly executed, making the writing and overall plot feel disjointed. Some people might stick around for the dynamic between Cole Sprouse's character, but for many, the show has lost its appeal.
