RANKING THE JURASSIC PARK/JURASSIC WORLD MOVIES
Ranking the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies can be subjective, but here’s a common perspective based on critical reception, audience enjoyment, and overall impact on the franchise.
Jurassic Park (1993)
The first film that took the world by storm. For me, growing up as a 10-year-old kid in a small Indian city, it was quite a revelation. In my class of 40 students, only 2-3 watched Hollywood movies, and they would regale the rest with their tales in class. When my father took me to see it, I might not have understood much at the time, but I could appreciate the class of the movie as it grew on me over the years.
The action, especially the first encounter with the Brachiosaurus when the main characters see a live dinosaur for the first time. The background score, which sets the stage perfectly. The swashbuckling entry of the T-rex. The kitchen room Raptors scene and the acting by the two kids.Jurassic Park stands out for its innovative use of CGI and animatronics, along with a compelling story that has made it a timeless classic in the genre.
Jurassic Park: The Lost World (1997)
This film, while not as universally praised as the first, still holds up with strong action sequences and character development. It expands the world established in the original film, introducing new dinosaurs and settings. While it may not have the same innovation and originality as the first film, it still offers a compelling watch for fans of the franchise.
Jurassic World (2015)
This movie successfully rebooted the franchise for a new generation, combining nostalgia with modern effects and a fresh storyline. It was a massive box office success and reinvigorated interest in the series. The introduction of Indominus Rex, Blue, and the cameo of Chris Pratt make the protagonist group stand out in the audience's mind.
The swashbuckling entry of the Indominus Rex. The mid-credits sequence involving the aviary and the resultant chaos. Episodes involving Blue. The climactic fight between the T-rex, Indominus Rex, Blue, and the Mosasaurus.Jurassic Park III (2001)
This installment is often seen as a step down from the first two films. While it has some entertaining moments and action, it lacks the depth and innovation of its predecessors. The aviary scenes are the only highlights in an otherwise forgettable sequel.
Jurassic Park 2: Lost World (1997)
Like Jurassic Park III, this film lacks the excitement and depth of the original. The only notable scene is the showdown between the two T-rex parents, but the vehicle chase that follows is more memorable.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
While content-wise it is a mix of elements from Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, it has some stunning scenes that are quite impressive. The scenes of the island being destroyed by a volcanic eruption, where the animals are escaping, are particularly touching and well-made. The auction sequence unveiling the Indoraptor and the dramatic escape from the cellular prison are gripping.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
The latest installment has mixed reception. Some fans enjoy the nostalgia of bringing back characters from the original trilogy, while others feel the plot is convoluted and lacks the excitement of earlier films. Despite the return of many beloved actors, the script and plot are not strong enough to make it a standout in the series.
This ranking reflects general trends in audience and critical reception as of August 2023. Individual preferences may vary significantly!
My personal ranking is:
Jurassic Park (1993) Jurassic Park III Jurassic Park: The Lost World (1997) Jurassic World (2015) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
