Post-Purchase Reflections: My Tesla Journey and Compromises

After buying a Tesla, it's not uncommon to have some regrets, especially with such an advanced and revolutionary brand. My journey began with a past 2016 Chevy SS sedan, a car few have heard of, known for its impressive 415hp and superior stopping power compared to the Camaro SS of the same year.

When it comes to Teslas, I was both amazed and slightly skeptical. I test drove a Model 3 and Model Y, and to my surprise, the Model Y, despite being an SUV, handled like a dream. It zipped as fast as I could think, without any drama or hardship. In contrast, the SS was a bit of a drama queen, making loud snorts and roars – albeit a lot of fun. I ultimately ordered a Model Y Performance variant.

There are definite advantages to owning an electric vehicle like the Tesla. For one, I don't need to fill up on gas, and I don't have to do oil changes anymore. Moreover, there are several other practical benefits that resonate with many Tesla owners. However, with every benefit comes a compromise – and this is where my journey took a twist.

Insurance Costs: A Major Complication

One of the most frustrating aspects of my experience is the insurance costs. In today's world, where inflation is soaring, auto insurance stands out as a significant contributor. Tesla offers its own insurance, which is generally the cheapest by far. However, if you drive the car in a spirited manner, it's not surprisingly penalized. I, a safe driver, can accelerate hard or turn hard when conditions permit, but the vehicle's collision detector is overly sensitive. As a result, I often get numerous collision warnings, and I've even resorted to turning it off. Tesla's nanny still tracks this data, making me uncomfortable.

Comfort Over Performance

Another point of concern is the ride quality. The optional sport suspension and large wheels, while visually impressive, make the ride relatively uncomfortable. My previous vehicles, a 2004 Infiniti G35 6MT and a 2016 Chevy SS sedan, were on the stiffer side. However, this Model Y is even more so. The trade-off for an aesthetically pleasing and stylish vehicle is a bit of discomfort.

Vegeting the Car for Its Looks

That said, my Tesla Model Y Performance is a stylish and roomy electric SUV with strong appeal. Although the performance trim makes it incredibly quick and dynamic, the optional sport suspension and large wheels do make for a relatively uncomfortable ride. I keep the car for one significant reason: aesthetics. The exterior and interior are simply captivating. It just looks nice and cool – or even stylish – which is a valuable asset, especially for someone who loves to stand out.

While my experience with Tesla has its ups and downs, it's clear that ultimately, the car's performance and style outweigh the negatives for me. The negotiation between practicality and personal enjoyment is an ongoing process, but it's one that, for now, I can live with.
