Personal Experiences with Russian People in the Workplace

I had the opportunity to work with Russian people in Archangel, a city deeply rooted in the timber industry before the fall of the USSR. While my experiences were largely positive, involving friendly interactions with regular people who were open and appreciative of our presence, I've encountered varying dynamics with Russian colleagues in subsequent work environments.

Diversity of Russian Professional Cultures

Over the course of my career, I've had the pleasure of working with three Russian women. Each of them had an intriguing set of characteristics that made their professional interactions not just unique but sometimes challenging.

Introduction to the First Russian Associate

The first Russian woman I worked with claimed to hold an engineering degree, yet her position didn't reflect that background. Her English was atrocious in both vocabulary and grammar, which often led to misunderstandings and miscommunications. She was also distressingly blunt in her interactions, showing little awareness or sensitivity to others' emotions. Whenever someone dared to challenge her orders or demands, her temper would flare viciously. I believe this might stem from some form of prejudice, possibly masked as a strong allegiance to ideals associated with Donald Trump. Such behavior was particularly evident during discussions involving people of color, where she expressed highly offensive views that clearly stemmed from a language barrier rather than genuine bigotry.

Second and Third Russian Associates

The second and third Russian women, while improving on some of the communication and emotional awareness issues, retained a strong preference for conformity to their personal expectations. They also shared a fondness for Sushi, a trait that made them stand out in our cultural exchanges. Despite my friends and family's skepticism about their motivations, I was able to build positive working relationships with them as long as I complied with their expectations and avoided political discussions. These individuals had a unique bond with me, which often transcended professional lines, but maintaining this closeness required navigating their often rigid and demanding nature.

Strategies for Working with These Colleagues

To build and maintain positive working relationships, I've found it helpful to be flexible and adaptable. Understanding and accepting the cultural norms, even if they differ from my own, plays a crucial role. Knowledge of a few Russian expressions and cultural practices, such as the appreciation for seafood like Sushi, can go a very long way in bridging the communication gap and fostering trust. It's also essential to be patient and open-minded, recognizing that these challenges often stem from a miscommunication or cultural misunderstanding rather than deliberate rudeness or prejudice.

In conclusion, while I have encountered some challenging dynamics when working with Russian colleagues in different professional settings, these experiences have taught me valuable lessons about cross-cultural communication and the importance of maintaining a professional demeanor. By acknowledging and respecting differences while finding common ground, we can build more harmonious and productive working environments.
