Pennywise’s Origin Story: Beyond the Clown

Step into the realm of imagination and explore the creature that captivated millions - Pennywise. Beyond the guise of a clown, Pennywise is a force of pure evil that exists in the interdimensional space known as Todash. This article delves into the origin of Pennywise, drawing from Stephen King's The Stand and It, exploring how and why he takes on the form of a clown, and the cosmic scale of his existence.

The Creature and the Turtle: Contrary Forces of Creation and Destruction

In the cosmic backdrop of the multiverse, two opposing entities existed - The Creature (referred to as 'IT') and the Turtle. IT, a force of pure destruction, was older than the universe that the Turtle created. The Turtle, representing creation, vomited our universe out during a time when he was unwell, much like the act of vomiting to expel unwanted substances. This universe, our home, was simply one more universe among countless others.

When IT first arrived on Earth, it did so through a meteorite, not from another part of space but from a far-off place within the interdimensional space known as Todash. According to Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series, this space exists between universes and is a concept that we cannot fully grasp as humans.

The Cycles of Sleep and Feeding

Once IT existed in the physical realm, it established a cycle of sleep and feeding. IT would sleep for 27 to 28 years, wake up, and ‘feed’ on fear, particularly the fears of those with vivid imaginations. The fear of creatures was likened to a flavor, with children's fears being described as vivid and appetizing, while adults' fears were deemed too insubstantial.

IT targeted children because their absolute faith in monsters and vivid imaginations made their fears more potent. IT chose to manifest as a clown to attract children, who often found clowns engaging and memorable. The clown was IT's bait, a charade designed to entice young ones into a trap. Pennywise, the clown form, is the manifestation of IT's need to connect with its intended victims in a way that they would understand. However, IT never truly mastered the art of acting, resulting in the clown's portrayal being a flawed but potent representation of IT's essence.

Early Appearances of the Clown

The early manifestations of Pennywise, as revealed in Mike Hanlon's father's album, suggest that IT’s clown form dates back to the early or mid-1700s. These early appearances show a 'funny fellow juggling oversized bowling pins in the middle of a muddy street.' Despite his appearance, the clown’s menacing presence is unmistakable, evoking terror in those who see it. Over time, Pennywise's manifestation became more perfected, aligning with the era of true clowns:

“He looked fascinated and thought ‘there I am, seeing him or It, really, seeing that is the face of the enemy. The picture showed a funny fellow juggling oversized bowling pins in the middle of a muddy street. He had a huge grin on his face. He wore no makeup except Bill’s whole face looked like makeup but he was bald except for two tufts of hair that stuck up like horns over his ears. Bill had no trouble recognizing him as their clown.”

Mike Hanlon’s recognition of the clown in the antique photograph highlights the continuity of IT's presence on Earth, transforming over time to better fit the cultural context of clowns in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Eternal Struggle

The story of IT and the Turtle is one of eternal struggle. While the Turtle continues to create and destroy our universe, IT remains dormant, waiting for the opportunity to feed. The cycle of IT waking up every 27 to 28 years creates a sense of dread and anticipation. The clown, as a manifestation of IT, serves both as a symbol of IT’s presence and as a means to ensure continued access to fear and, by extension, power.

Understood from a cosmic perspective, IT’s existence is vast and timeless, far older than our universe. Its journey through time and space is a legacy of creation and destruction, and its form as a clown is but a fleeting moment in its long and enduring history.

In conclusion, Pennywise is more than just a clown. IT is a cosmic entity with a deep and complex history, whose actions and manifestations are intertwined with the very fabric of our universe. Its presence as a clown is a deliberate ploy to lure and entrap its victims, culminating in a dark and terrifying reality that resonates throughout Stephen King's literary works.
