Real-World Accounts of Travel in Newfoundland

A Tour Under Unusual Circumstances

While my most memorable visit was during military service in Labrador, my family and I also traveled through Newfoundland a couple of times. On one occasion, my family and I were en route to CFB Goose Bay, Labrador, on our way to a tour duty. Another time, my tour was complete, and we had the chance to explore the island. My extended family member, a beloved aunt, decided to walk around the island a couple of years ago with her two big German Shepherds in tow.

The Flexibility and Warmth of Newfoundlanders

One of the most unique experiences came when this aunt and her dogs stayed in a small town near a motel. Late in the day, they saw the motel and decided to check in. To their astonishment, there was only a sign: “Call [phone number] to register. Pick a room with an unlocked door. The key will be on the desk. We’ll be around at some point to collect payment.”

On another occasion, the aunt and her dogs were on the Trans-Canada Trail after they hit a deer in New Brunswick. In Port aux Basques, after getting off the ferry, they stopped at a garage that offered to store the car for free. They set off on the trail, and the cart used to transport their gear started to fall apart. However, instead of being charged, the garage came out to assist them, reinforcing the cart and making sure it was usable until she was too far away from the garage.

The aunt also shares accounts of people she met on the trail, who insisted that she and the dogs stay in their cottages for at least a night to do laundry and get a shower. Such experiences epitomize the warmth and hospitality of Newfoundland residents.
