Navigating the Challenges of a Lifelong Career in Film Production Design after 60

Throughout my enduring journey in the film industry as a Prop Master, Set Decorator, and Art Director-Production Designer, I have encountered a diverse array of challenges as I have aged. Despite my extensive experience, I only began facing significant physical obstacles in my later years. However, the shift in my physical abilities has given me an opportunity to focus more on the creative and design aspects of my work, which have always held a special place in my heart.

Physical Challenges

Around the age of 74, I first experienced noteworthy physical challenges due to osteoarthritis in my spine and knees. My career in film production design, which spans over four decades, saw a considerable shift following my 65th to 70th years. It was at this point that I had to stop actively working on set, particularly in staging props, due to the demanding nature of constant standing and frequent night shoots.

Recent Challenges

Currently, at the age of 79, the only significant challenges I face are location surveys and journeys to remote areas that require strenuous hiking and standing for extended periods. Despite these physical hurdles, advancements in medical technology have provided me with solutions. Using a cane, I have managed to carry on with my work, with the promise of further improvements in my mobility with upcoming surgeries and steroid injections in my back.

Considering Retirement

At this juncture, I am seriously contemplating retirement. Interestingly, colleagues and peers are often astonished to learn my age, as I myself was taken aback by the fact that I considered retiring until recently. The dynamic of an older workforce in the film industry is becoming increasingly common, and it is a subject worth exploring in greater depth.

Reflections on the Profession

Before the advent of computer drafting programs, I had colleagues with unique physical challenges, such as a production designer who had only peripheral vision and a designer who relied on a cane to walk. Despite these challenges, the job has gradually become less physically demanding, focusing more on design history, color, construction and architectural materials, ethnic cultures, and collaboration with various creative professionals and producers. The art and science of production design now rest more on the principles of creativity, history, and collaboration.

The role of a production designer encompasses a broad range of skills. Understanding the director’s vision, managing various art departments, and effectively collaborating with producers and marketers to stay within budgets are all crucial elements. Moreover, the ability to channel one's heritage, culture, and personal experiences into the design of sets and props enhances the authenticity and realism of film productions. These skills are particularly valuable in retaining an older workforce in the film industry.
