Navigating Health Challenges as a Transgender Person Post-Hormone Treatment
Have you, as a trans person, experienced any health issues following hormone replacement therapy (HRT)? Although I have faced some health challenges, they are not directly related to my HRT. Since starting my estrogen and testosterone hormone treatments in July 2016, my levels have been quite variable, which is largely due to my illness stemming from the Thomas Fire in December 2017 and what can be described as the 'X factor.'
Managing Hormone Levels and Medical Care
Thankfully, my current and most trusted endocrinologist is working to ensure that my blood levels are within the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) guidelines. Additionally, my general practitioner is supporting my overall health and well-being. I have a tendency to push myself too hard athletically, which often results in injuries. This highlights the importance of finding a balance between physical activity and rest.
Psychological Well-being and Coping Mechanisms
Psychologically, I find myself much more comprised when fueled by estrogen compared to testosterone. However, there are numerous other factors that contribute to my overall health, including my age, emotional state, and sleep patterns. Dealing with age-related challenges and emotional disturbances can significantly impact one's mental health. Insomnia is a persistent issue for me, and learning how to relax and improve my sleep are crucial aspects of my daily routine.
Navigating Environmental and Health Concerns
Environmental factors also play a significant role in my health. I am particularly sensitive to toxins in the air, which can trigger various health issues. Although there is no definitive solution to air quality problems, I try to minimize my exposure by avoiding certain outdoor activities and using air purifiers. Managing these conditions can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when dealing with other health issues such as interstitial cystitis (IC) and arthritis.
Improvement in Mental Health and Gender Dysphoria
One of the most significant improvements I've noticed is a marked improvement in my pre-existing gender dysphoria, depression, and anxiety. Hormone therapy has been instrumental in alleviating these conditions, providing me with a sense of stability and comfort. It's important to recognize that mental health can be greatly influenced by hormone levels and overall health, and seeking consistent medical care is vital.
In conclusion, while hormone treatments have been beneficial, they are not without challenges. Managing hormone levels and addressing psychological and environmental factors are essential for overall well-being. Continuous care and support from medical professionals are key to navigating these health issues effectively.
