My TV Show Preferences: What I Watch and Avoid
My TV Show Preferences: What I Watch and Avoid
When it comes to television, I have a clear preference for certain genres and shows over others. Here, I'll share what kind of TV shows I enjoy and why, as well as those I steer clear of.
What I Like
My love for British soap operas is well-known. I find Coronation Street, EastEnders, and Emmerdale incredibly engaging. The intricate storylines and heartfelt relationships found in these shows make them a joy to watch. Additionally, I'm a fan of Countdown, the quiz show where players compete to find words and numbers, providing both entertainment and a mental challenge.
What I Don't Like
However, not all TV shows excite me. I have a strong aversion to shows like Love Island and Big Brother. These reality shows, with their intense and often shallow competition, do not appeal to my taste for meaningful storytelling.
Breaking Bad and Beyond
Another series that has failed to win me over is Breaking Bad. While I am sympathetic to the character's motivations, the use of methamphetamine, no matter the intent, is something I find unsettling. This discomfort carries over to other shows that delve into similar dark themes.
TV Shows I Can't Stand
For me, The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are so far beyond the pale that the mere mention brings to mind a remix of frustration and disappointment. The repetitive format and the superficial drama have me reaching for the "stop" button, even if there were no other TV shows available.
What Kinds of Programs I Avoid
My TV viewing habits are quite selective. Here are some genres and types of shows I actively avoid:
War: Other than the classic MASH, which holds up for its time, I find war dramas to be overly somber and depressing. Dramas: This category includes most cop shows, doctor shows, and lawyer shows. Period dramas do not find a place in my viewing schedule either. Comedies: While some are delightful, many comedies lose their appeal over multiple seasons. Shows like Friends and The Office were entertaining at first, but didn't live up to expectations over time. This Is Us and Similar Shows: The sheer number of advertisements in shows like This Is Us is a significant drawback for me. I find it difficult to sit through the commercials and never bring myself to watch the show. Home Renovation Shows: These shows are excessively mundane and lack excitement, making them a complete bore to watch. Reality Shows and Competitions: These often feature extreme behaviors and decisions that I find hard to watch. Talk Shows: I have a hard time engaging with talk shows, finding them to be less entertaining than other formats. My Viewing Preferences
Given the limited time I allocate to TV watching, the programs I choose usually serve as a backdrop for other activities. When I do decide to watch, it is usually for entertainment purposes. Preferring light and funny, scary, or fantastical content, I often choose genres like:
Fantasy and Sci-Fi: My primary genres of interest in both shows and movies include fantasy, science fiction, and horror. These genres allow for an escape into imaginative worlds and explore new dimensions of storytelling. Crime: Occasional crime dramas, while not my top pick, can add an intriguing layer to my viewing experience. I often have a soft spot for the occasional drama and soap operas, with Hollyoaks being an exception. My TV Viewing Habits in Brief
For the most part, I watch very little TV. When I do tune in, I have a tendency to watch background noise while I read or engage in other activities. The few shows I do watch always have to be entertaining. Additionally, I have a strong preference for newer TV shows, and I seldom watch anything made after the 1990s. I'm a big fan of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror, especially in shows and movies.
Some other genres that I generally don't enjoy include:
Commercials for Funeral Plans: These are often highly emotional and can be quite sad, causing me to switch off. News Programs: While some news can be informative, I find it difficult to engage with constant updates and news cycles. Docuseries: Like This Is Us, I generally avoid documentaries unless the topic truly interests me.However, if a show or documentary looks interesting, I am willing to give it a chance. Ultimately, my viewing choices reflect a preference for engaging, entertaining content and a love for genres that allow me to immerse myself in new worlds and stories.
