My Movie Habits and Unwatched Classics

I have a peculiar relationship with movies. While some films are constantly hyped by my peers, I often find myself avoiding them. My reasoning is simple: not all actors or movies resonate with me, regardless of the hype.

Why Pierce Brosnan Matters Not

For instance, I try to avoid any movie where Pierce Brosnan plays a role, excluding the delightful Mamma Mia! as it proved to be a pleasant exception. The actor's acting prowess is, in my opinion, almost non-existent. This principle extends to other factors like physical attributes or car chases; if an actor is hyped for those reasons alone, I'm inclined to dismiss their role.

The Myth of Hollywood Success

The pinnacle of this mindset is my approach to blockbuster films. Back in the day, I avoided the Notebook purely for the sake of being contrarian. However, today, I don't let popularity dictate my choices. I firmly believe in pursuing my passion irrespective of how mainstream or niche a movie is. This often aligns with my observations that many people are easily swayed by the pretense of Hollywood success.

Let's take, for example, a summer blockbuster with explosions and car chases. Just because there's a car chase and explosions, and all your friends are watching it, doesn't make it a great movie. Unfortunately, many trailer moments can build a false sense of excitement without substance. Take Parasite for instance; it was a Korean film without typical Hollywood tropes. I didn't lower my expectations for it. Instead, I appreciated how well its unique storytelling and unexpected twists exceeded expectations, making it a standout film.

A Time When Everything Was Buzzworthy

The Blair Witch Project was a sensation when it first came out. It was the talk of the town, and everyone was eager to see it. However, what made this film special was its innovative storytelling and realism. It wasn't just a movie with explosions or a mindlessly entertaining franchise like the Twilight saga.

The Twilight franchise serves as a perfect example of the cyclical hype around a movie series. First, the media hyped it so much that it seemed like a groundbreaking, must-see piece of art. Then, as the cash cow dried up, the chatter quickly turned. The underlying issues with Robert Pattinson's performance and the overall narrative were often overlooked when the series was popular.

Finding Folklore in Niche Films: The Blair Witch Project: Once a sensation, it proved that genuine, independent storytelling can stand the test of time without the need for large-scale production or typical Hollywood spectacle. Parasite: A Korean film that surpassed expectations, proving that engaging storytelling is more captivating than overhyped special effects or star power. Twilight: A case study in how media hype can dramatically sway public opinion and expectations, often leading to disappointment.

In conclusion, my approach to movies involves not letting hype or popularity dictate my views. I prefer to find films that, like Parasite or The Blair Witch Project, offer something unique and genuinely engaging, rather than following the crowd. In a world where Hollywood and media can often manufacture excitement, staying true to personal tastes and expectations is a refreshing approach.
