Which Movie is So Bad You Can't Finish It?

There's a genre of films that, once in a while, we come across and decide to watch out of curiosity. However, sometimes, it's better to avoid them altogether. In this article, we delve into some movies that personally made me exit halfway through and why they are the epitome of bad filmmaking.

One Movie That Is Simply Unwatchable

One movie stands out due to its sheer awfulness: A Serbian Film. This film, known for its extreme content, left me at a loss for words. I knew of its reputation ahead of time but failed to look into it thoroughly. The whole experience was not just unpleasant but also a protest against poor filmmaking.

SPOLIER WARNING: I won't get into the details of a particularly disturbing scene involving a newborn baby, which was the final straw. At that point, I switched off the film and spent the next few minutes trying to contain my queasiness. Reading an online synopsis later, I was relieved I hadn't seen the worst parts. It was a thoroughly miserable experience, yet I don't regret lending it the luxury of a stop.

The scene that ended it for me was a scene featuring a newborn baby. I’ll say nothing more about this here, but at that point, I switched the film off and spent the next few minutes trying to keep the contents of my stomach inside me. I managed to do so only just. I read an online synopsis later on and from what I read, I was glad I did not witness some of the more disturbing scenes. It was a thoroughly unpleasant experience. I regret ever starting to watch it but don’t regret switching it off.

Other Films That Were a Struggle

The experience of watching A Serbian Film made me more wary of other films that I found difficult to finish due to their poor quality. Here are a few more movies that did not make the cut:

The Road

So bad that it was almost unbearable. It didn't even manage to entertain. Considering my love for films, it was really a hardship to finish this one.

The Fountain

I managed to finish this, though it still didn't change my mind. It's a curious fact that a few films that began with "The" shared the same quality—terrible.

Audition

I alluded to this film in a separate article. Specifically, the dog dish scene was something that I left quite vivid in my memory due to its inhumanity.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

So bad that I could only watch for short intervals, forty minutes at a time. It was a Herculean effort to sit through one entire sitting.

Captain Marvel

This movie was so bland and unexciting that I could not muster the necessary interest to care. It was a movie that made me question the reasoning behind it. However, I have a soft spot for Marvel films, especially the Cap America franchise, which remains my favorite.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

One of the most personally painful films for me, as it was the sequel. It was the first time I realized a genuine disappointment in a big-screen experience that I had grown up with and cherished. My daughter's emotional reaction to the film's climax also added to my dissatisfaction. I eventually finished it by watching one segment at a time, just like I did with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Other Films to Avoid

Finally, there are other films that are so bad that they were not my cup of tea, such as The Mummy and its 2017 remake, Gummo, and Black Butler. It is understandable to avoid such movies to prevent a similar experience.

While there are many great movies out there that entertain and inspire, some films simply cannot make the grade. For your viewing pleasure, please keep an eye out for these and give them a wide berth.
