Movie Disappointments: Twisters 2024, Jurassic World: Dominion, and Project Ares
What Much-Hyped 2019 Movie Did You Find Disappointing?
There are moments when movie hype can be too much to handle, leading to unfulfilled expectations. In this piece, I'll share my experience with three much-anticipated films: the hotly anticipated Twisters 2024, Jurassic World: Dominion, and Project Ares. This story encompasses my experiences viewing these movies and why they fell short of my hopes and expectations.
Twisters 2024
One of the most significant letdowns for me in the past year was Twisters 2024. Having watched the original 1996 film, I entered into this sequel with low expectations, discerning that it would not live up to its predecessor. However, even with this caution, the movie still disappointed me greatly. The addition of new characters failed to engage me; rather, the tornado scenes were mundane and unexciting. Additionally, Glen Powell's portrayal was an annoyance, which did not help matters. The movie lacked the heart, soul, and excitement of its predecessor, and I can only speculate as to why they didn't select Helen Hunt to direct. Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman's contributions to the original film were invaluable, and their absence was keenly felt.

Jurassic World: Dominion
Let's delve into another example of unfulfilled potential in the world of cinematic franchises. Jurassic World: Dominion had a promising setup at the end of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, but it ultimately let us down. While I value the setup and potential that the creators had, the execution spoiled it all. The concept of releasing 30 dinosaurs and allowing them to take over the world was outlandish, and the military's inability to handle the situation seemed contrary to logic. The movie's failure to capitalize on its strong cast and concept turned out to be regrettable. My recommendation would be to stick to the first four installations, which are entertaining, and avoid the fifth and sixth films altogether.

Movie Disappointment: Project Ares
My experience with Project Ares was particularly disappointing, given my love for space sci-fi and fantasy movies. The movie starred Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones and was a must-see for fans of the genre. However, the promotional moments, like Brad Pitt's conversation with ISS astronauts and the ambiguous portrayal of the moon chase scenes, raised suspicions. As the movie progresses, things start to go awry. The dialogue showing an astronaut, son of an older scientist, and astronaut delivering a religious rant was jarring. Furthermore, the grim and depressing portrayal of lunar and Martian outposts was a clear sign that something was wrong with the movie. The action scenes were so off that my daughter became bored.
Perhaps the final straw for me was the last act, where the father and son had a meeting. This was a clear indication that the movie was actively discouraging space exploration, which stood in stark contrast to its premise. The experience was so disappointing and frustrating that I left the cinema in a foul mood and felt guilty for dragging my daughter to such an experience.

Conclusion: Movies can sometimes fail to live up to the hype, leaving us feeling let down and disappointed. From the tornado-laden action of Twisters 2024 to the clunky dinosaur-fighting in Jurassic World: Dominion, to the frustrating anti-space exploration narrative in Project Ares, these experiences have helped me learn the value of remindedly setting realistic expectations. While disappointment is inevitable, these experiences can still offer valuable insights into what works and what doesn't in the world of filmmaking.
