Mental Health Struggles and Overcoming Depression and Anxiety

Living with mental health issues can be a daily challenge, and it often requires a combination of different strategies to manage symptoms effectively. In this article, we explore the journey of two individuals who have faced significant struggles with depression and anxiety, their experiences in seeking help, and the strategies they have found helpful in coping with their mental health.

Returning to Therapy for Mental Well-being

I’ve resumed my regular therapy sessions this year, prioritizing a calm environment and managing stress levels, despite the occasional difficulty in maintaining such balance. Dealing with mental health issues on a daily basis involves a degree of self-awareness, and learning to manage strong emotional responses is crucial. It’s a process that can be particularly challenging during certain times of the year, such as December and January, when anxiety tends to spike for unknown reasons. However, despite these challenges, starting therapy again has proven to be a beneficial step towards improving mental well-being.

Diagnosed with Depression and Anxiety

Recently, after two months of enduring emotional pain and forced smiles, I was finally diagnosed with depression and anxiety. The diagnosis was a turning point, as I was on the brink of a mental breakdown. For three days, I was bedridden, barely eating or bathing, and relying on my mother’s encouragement to push me out of bed. During this period, I even attempted to harm myself, which deeply concerned my mother. My journey to recovery began with the doctors’ intervention and medication, which helped alleviate some of the overwhelming sadness.

Overcoming Mental Health Struggles

To cope with my depression and anxiety, my mother was persistent in ensuring I followed a routine of waking up, having breakfast, and taking daily walks. She also helped me delete my social media accounts and prioritized activities that did not trigger sadness. My best friend provided emotional support by calling me every night to ensure I didn’t feel alone. I explored positive books and engaging activities, but it took time to regain my former self. The road to recovery has been challenging, but vital to maintain hope and a positive outlook.

Tips for Coping with Mental Health Issues

1. Seeking Professional Help: Early intervention and seeking professional help are crucial. Medications, such as antidepressants, can significantly reduce symptoms if prescribed by a healthcare provider.

2. Developing a Routine: Establishing a daily routine can provide structure and a sense of normalcy. Simple activities like waking up at the same time, eating meals at regular intervals, and engaging in physical activity can help normalize your day-to-day life.

3. Social Support: Maintaining a support network of friends, family, or support groups can provide emotional relief and encouragement. Sharing your struggles with others can help you feel less isolated and understood.

4. Mindfulness and Self-Care: Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and other relaxation techniques can help manage anxiety and stress. Prioritizing self-care and engaging in activities that bring joy can also positively impact mental health.

Though the journey to recovery is not easy, it is possible with the right support and strategies. By taking that first step and seeking help, you can begin to heal and reclaim your life.
