Memories of 'The Love Boat': My Favorite and_least Favorite Episodes

As a vintage television series that captured my heart during the early 80s, The Love Boat has left a lasting impression. Among the numerous episodes, there is one that stands out in particular, especially for its fashion extravaganza and the glamorous backdrop of Acapulco. But not all episodes lived up to the hype, as evidenced by another that I unequivocally dislike.

Favorite Episode: Special Cruise to Acapulco

My absolute favorite episode is the one where the crew and passengers embark on a special cruise to Acapulco for a fashion festival. This episode anchored the crest of early 80s glam with its array of top designers, including Halston, Bob Mackie, Geoffrey Beene, and Gloria Vanderbilt. The highlight of the episode was the dazzling display of gorgeous models, featuring a rare cameo by main character Julie McCoy as a model for a day.

Adding to the excitement was the typically effervescent and versatile Jayne Kennedy, who stole the spotlight as Arnold's exasperated teacher in Different Strokes. The episode reached its peak when Arnold and Dudley caught Jayne moonlighting as a cocktail waitress adorned in a playful Playboy bunny outfit. It was a testament to the era's bold fashion sense and undeniable charm.

Least Favorite Episode: Vincent Price's Illusionist

On the other hand, my least favorite episode stars Vincent Price, the legendary actor known for his roles in horror films. In this episode, Price portrays an irresistible magician who brings an ocean of complications to The Love Boat's raft of adventures. Unfortunately, this episode does not live up to the series' typical high standards. Despite Vincent Price's exceptional performance, the storyline itself is rather mundane and unsatisfying, which disappointed my expectations for the series.

My decision to include this disappointing episode in my list is for the sake of providing a contrast and balance to the narrative. It's a reminder of how even beloved series can stumble from time to time. For those who wish to follow along, you can watch the full episode on YouTube, as it has been uploaded by a generous fan.

Another notable episode that I cherish is where the enigmatic and eccentric actor John Astin, best known for his role as Gomez Addams, stars as a quirky hermit on an uncharted island. John Astin's performance as the hermit is nothing short of brilliant, humorously capturing the character's eccentricity with a mix of wit and melancholy. The episode concludes with a particularly poignant end that makes one ponder the fragility of humanity.

Given the episode's mystery and the impeccable delivery by John Astin, you can watch it on YouTube if you are a fan of both classic TV series and quirky performances. Here is the link to the episode:

In essence, The Love Boat holds a special place in my heart for its blend of glamour, humor, and unforgettable moments. Even the least favorite episode serves as a testament to the journey through the cast's memorable performances and the makers' creative endeavors.
