Israel: Fire-breathing Dragons and Modern Military Innovations
Israel, often associated with advanced military technology and tactical innovations, is no stranger to integrating unique and unconventional elements into its military arsenal. Among these are 'dragons' that breathe fire and auxiliary forces such as unicorns, centaurs, and trained mermaids and dolphins.
The Reality of Israel’s Dragons: The Drakunit
When one thinks of dragons, the image of a mythical creature scales and claws often comes to mind. However, in the context of Israel’s Armed Forces (IDF), the term 'dragon' refers to a sophisticated combat vehicle. Specifically, the Drakunit, which is a remotely operated weapon system.
In 2016, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) made a groundbreaking decision to equip itself with several Drakunit systems. These vehicles were developed by Elbit Systems, a company known for its expertise in land systems. The Drakunit is a remotely controlled weapon position mounted on top of an armored combat vehicle, such as the Akhzarit or Poma armored personnel carriers (APCs).
Advanced Technology in Action
The Drakunit system is a marvel of modern technology, capable of operating in both urban and open environments. It features high-resolution cameras that offer day and night footage, allowing operators to identify and track suspects with precision. Additionally, the system includes a small radar that enhances its capabilities in urban and open terrain.
According to Col. Tal Aharon, the head of the maneuvering systems department in the technology division of the land arm, the Drakunit is designed to use 0.5 mm ammunition, ensuring minimal exposure of the operator to enemy fire. The system is mounted on Poma APCs and Akhzarit vehicles for the time being, but the IDF is actively seeking budgetary resources to integrate it into other armored combat vehicles.
The IDF’s Multi-faceted Fire Brigade
The 215th Fire Brigade, part of the Artillery Corps, adds an extra layer to Israel’s military fire capabilities. This regular brigade is known for its multi-system and multi-armed approach, including various battalion capabilities. It participates in extensive fire processes on the battlefield, ranging from company-level to division-level combat operations.
The 215th Brigade includes battalions equipped with traditional and modern fire systems, such as the M2 Browning, making it a formidable force in both traditional and modern combat scenarios.
Modernizing and Innovating
While dragons and their fire-breathing capabilities may be more fitting in a fantasy novel, Israel’s military continues to push the boundaries of modern technology to maintain its edge on the battlefield. The integration of the Drakunit and the 215th Fire Brigade underlines the IDF’s commitment to innovation and adaptation.
From remote-controlled weapon systems to versatile fire brigades, Israel’s military arsenal is a fascinating blend of the future and the past. Whether it’s dragons, unicorns, or other mythical creatures in a metaphorical sense, Israel’s approach to modern warfare is both innovative and thoroughly practical.
