Is the U.S. Republican Party Still the Party of Moral Superiority and Classification?
When people discuss the U.S. Republican Party, it often feels like engaging with a conversation where moral superiority is neither the issue nor the message. Rather, it seems more like a party that is obsessed with obfuscation and prevarication. How can those who claim moral superiority by religion vote for candidates devoid of morals, aiming for a status akin to emperors of yore or Putin today?
The Dubious Patriotism of the January 6th Insurrection
The rhetoric surrounding the January 6th Insurrection is telling. Anyone who supports the insurrection is now branded as a 'Patriot'. However, a real patriot in the true sense of the word is someone who values law and order, just like what we saw during the early 1940s. The Republican party, however, seems more aligned with a National Security State approach, where authoritarianism and fear are used as a facade for the preservation of a specific political ideology.
Policy Proposals and Their Dangers
Beyond the hollow rhetoric, the Republican party's 2025 Project lays out a series of policies that are deeply troubling. Here are a few of them:
Gutting Abortion Access: Despite his initial stance on this matter, former President Trump is now backing away from it. This move can drastically affect women's rights. Mass Deportation and Economic Havoc: Plans to deport millions of immigrants, ending birthright citizenship, and separating families can cause severe economic turmoil in farming and service industries. Unauthorized Surveillance: Plans to use the government to spy on Americans' lives illegally and without warrants raise serious concerns about privacy and civil liberties. Suppression of Dissent: Plans to deploy the National Guard and armed force to suppress protests and dissent can lead to a chilling effect on free speech. Voter Suppression: Claims of voter fraud, threats against election officials, and rigging of the U.S. Census could result in a stolen election and an undemocratic outcome. The Electoral Roadblocks
Our electoral college system of selecting a president can be a formidable roadblock to voting for a candidate outside the Democratic party. According to an educated friend, voting for any candidate other than the Democratic nominee could contribute to a Trump victory, which would be an existential threat to our democracy. Trump would have no guardrails in his next presidency, with input from controversial figures like Steven Miller, Steve Bannon, Michael Flynn, and potentially Putin.
Choosing the Lesser Evil
When it comes to voting, the choice can be complicated. As the saying goes, 'The perfect is often the enemy of the good.' We need to recognize that no political party is perfect, and sometimes voting for the 'good' option is necessary to prevent a worse outcome. Keeping the same party in power for senators, representatives, and the president can avoid a frozen governance, according to some perspectives.
Do not let the pursuit of perfection hinder you from making a good choice. The goal is to uphold democracy and civil liberties. Voting is a vital step in safeguarding these values.
