Is the First Film of the New Star Wars Trilogy Set to Satisfy or Disappoint Fans?

Introduction to the New Star Wars Trilogy

To each their own, and there is no single path to satisfy everyone, certainly not Star Wars fans, who have had a profound connection with the saga since its beginning. However, I personally believe that the latest installment of the Star Wars trilogy, scheduled for 2015, will win over most self-respecting Star Wars enthusiasts.

The creative forces behind this new chapter include a long-time fan of the series, someone who has been crafting stories for these iconic characters, and the definitive hands-off approach from George Lucas, known for his controversial involvement in the prequels. It seems like the perfect alignment of talent and direction to deliver a top-notch addition to this beloved saga.

Expectations and Prepare for Disappointment

On a whole, the newest film is set to be incredibly well received. The casting choices, glimpses of the action, and the application of practical effects make it seem like it's primed for a major comeback. It has been almost 15 years since the last movie, and Revenge of the Sith served as a solid conclusion, though somewhat disheartening, to the preceding trilogy. The Force Awakens has a chance to set the stage for a whole new universe and showcase the awesomeness of the new Legacy Era.

Old vs. New: The Expanded Universe and Fan Sentiment

Despite Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, there are still significant numbers of diehard fans, including myself, who have lost interest in the new movies. The prequels took much of the joy out of the original saga for many, and their expectations for the new trilogy are understandably low. But let's face it, the prequels, in many ways, were doomed from the start. People who were overwhelmed by the original trilogy in their youth expected a similar experience from the prequels. This just wasn't going to happen, and with the sequel trilogy coming, original fans will be even older and even less likely to be as overwhelmed.

The Challenges and Possibilities of the Sequel Trilogy

The best thing the writers can do is probably establish a new beginning and reconnect with a new generation of fans. The existing hexalogy tells a complete story: the rise, fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker parallel to the rise and fall of the Empire. How to carry on the story without feeling tacked on has proven to be a significant challenge. Moreover, it is not very easy to see macho characters like Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia as old people. The Force Awakens will present their presence but will recede into the background as supporting characters rather than protagonists. Some or all of them may die as the trilogy progresses, with Han possibly already in the first film.

The Potential for a New Generation of Fans

Some of the most die-hard original fans may come to see the sequel trilogy as a tacked-on only semi-relevant part of the saga. But with strong storylines and an engaging younger cast, the writers may create a new generation of die-hard fans. This, of course, aligns with Disney's ultimate hope for the new saga. The key is to craft compelling, younger characters that resonate with a new audience, thereby ensuring the continuity and passion of the Star Wars legacy.
