Is a Movie-Only Marvel Fan Fake or Just Focused?

No, it doesn't make you a fake Marvel fan if you only watch the movies. Being a fan can take many forms, and enjoying the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films is a legitimate way to engage with the franchise. Some fans may delve into comics, TV shows, or other media, while others might prefer just the films. Everyone has their own way of appreciating a fandom, and what matters most is your enjoyment of the stories and characters!

There’s nothing wrong with being an MCU fan, or a fan of Marvel Movies or Marvel Studios. However, presenting yourself as a ‘Marvel fan’ in a context where people are assuming that includes comics can be misleading. Misleading others, especially when done on purpose, makes you come off as fake. In short, it's perfectly fine to only watch the movies. After all, there’s no such thing as a fake Marvel fan! You’re on your own path to enjoying the universe.

A Not-So-Full Picture of Marvel

Let's take the Home trilogy as an example. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) are highly favored Spider-Man movies. That's perfectly fine and no one would think any worse of you for it. However, this being said, Spider-Man has a legacy that extends far beyond these films. The character has been around in comic book form since the early 1960s, with decades of material available for fans to explore.

But perhaps you're not that hardcore. Not watching comics doesn't make you a fake fan. As long as you enjoy the movies, that's enough. The films, while entertaining, are generally big-budget action movies with one-dimensional characters and limited rosters due to the film rights of the two biggest teams: the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. While many MCU films are standalone, they are ultimately basic action movies. It’s okay to enjoy them, but they are not great works of narrative. For a deeper understanding, I highly recommend you read the comics, even if you don't read them all. There are key events you can study to better understand the timeline.

The Benefits of Reading the Comics

The comics allow for much more depth in character development and are not limited by real-world constraints. Take Spider-Man, for instance, as my favorite character. Reading his comics is a must, as it can seem daunting, but it’s definitely worth it. His character is well-written, and he has an incredible rogues gallery of villains, including the likes of Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, and Venom. You get to see the various story arcs and character developments that couldn't fit into the film adaptations. Missing out on these deeper storylines might be a missed opportunity for some fans.

For casual MCU fans, there's no problem with just enjoying the movies. But for those with a larger interest in the universe, I highly recommend building a knowledge of the comics because the MCU is still a side universe and not the main one. In Marvel's universe, Earth-616 is the main universe. The comics are a sacred ground, and while you might be inspired to try some comics, even just focused on your favorite character, it might make you want to read more.

Conclusion

As long as you're not a MCU supremacy fanboy, you're fine. The Marvel comic books are a rich source of stories, and reading them can enhance your enjoyment of the MCU. Who knows, you might find yourself falling in love with the comics and discovering a new level of fandom. The world of Marvel is vast and varied, and there's something for everyone to enjoy!
