Is There Room for a New Buffyverse? Insights from a SEO Expert

As an SEO expert, my perspective on the potential for a new Buffyverse series is complex. Many would argue that a remake is inevitable, given the enduring popularity of the franchise. However, my opinion is decidedly against it. Here's why:

The Era is Dead – A New Series Won't Live Up to the Original

The era in which Buffy the Vampire Slayer was created is long gone. Attempting to recreate that magic with a modern series would likely result in a show that prioritizes being sexy, edgy, and controversial over substance. The focus would inevitably be on casting choices rather than narrative. The original series is so good that even the bad episodes have memorable moments. But it's over now, and we have closure. Revisiting that story could only diminish the joy we have from remembering Buffy.

What the New Buffyverse Should Not Be About

First, a new Buffyverse should not be an exact remake of the original. The original was relevant in the 1990s, but the current decade needs a different kind of Buffy. Secondly, it should not rely solely on bringing in the original cast to gain credibility. While it's amusing to see familiar faces pop up, scattering them mindlessly would be a waste of an opportunity. Instead, a substantial presence of regular characters would enhance the series. Lastly, it should not aim to revisit the story – let's leave it where we left it, with a high note. Quoting the incomparable Sarah Michelle Gellar, 'We ended on a high note. We don’t want Godfather III.' Case closed.

What the New Buffyverse Should Be About: Women Empowerment and Coming of Age

At its core, the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series stood for women empowerment and tackled social changes head-on. I hope that the new series will follow this path. At its heart, Buffy is a story of a small-town schoolgirl finding her voice and presence in the world. It's a timeless coming-of-age narrative, and there's hardly anything like it today. A new Buffyverse that delivers this would be a welcome addition to the genre.

Closing Thoughts

While some advocate against remaking series, I see the value in series remakes. They offer a new perspective and a chance to relive a beloved story. If a new Buffy series is bad, I still have the original to fall back on. But if done right, it could provide two great series for fans to enjoy. The key is to respect the original story and find new, relevant ways to tell it.
