Is 'Pit Babe' Overrated? A Comprehensive Review

The term 'overrated' is often bandied about in the world of Thai Boys Love (BL) series, and we can certainly apply this label to Pit Babe. While the series gained a significant following and has been lauded for its charming leads and lighthearted storyline, some viewers argue that it falls flat in terms of originality and substance.

The Overlooked Charm

Pit Babe, like many popular Thai BL series, has garnered a massive following. Fans appreciate the on-screen chemistry between the leads Pavel (Babe) and Pooh (Charlie), and the lighthearted nature of their relationship. However, upon closer examination, the series suffers from a lack of originality and an overly formulaic plot that relies heavily on common tropes within the genre.

The Flawed Main Couple

One of the standout criticisms of Pit Babe is the main couple, Pavel and Pooh. Despite their on-screen chemistry, the script and the characters' development leave much to be desired. Pavel, played by Pavel Rybakov, stands out as the far superior actor and brings a deeper, more nuanced performance to the role of 'Babe'. In contrast, Pooh (Charlie) appears as something of a fumbling amateur, often embodying a confused state that detracts from the overall quality of the series.

The Story Derailed

The storyline of Pit Babe is where the series truly falters. Initially, it sets itself up to be a romantic story centered around a car enthusiast and his idol – an exciting premise. However, as the plot progresses, it takes an unexpected and confusing turn into an Omegaverse setting. The inclusion of themes such as previously adopted human trafficking organizations, secret identities as superpowered individuals, and breeding scenarios between Alphas and Enigmas adds complexity and confusion rather than clarity.

Plotholes Galore

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the series is its numerous plotholes. One of the standout examples is the character of "B," who can absorb the powers of others through touch, and the character "Alpha" who can see into the future by touching people. Despite frequent interactions, these abilities should manifest in some way, yet they do not. This consistent failure to follow through on established plot elements only serves to undermine the series' credibility and engagement.

Is it Worth the Eye? The Omegaverse Controversy

From a broader perspective, the Omegaverse genre itself often receives criticism, and Pit Babe is no exception. While some viewers find the soft focus and hyper-masculinity of the Omegaverse appealing, others, like myself, find it infatuating and even offensive. The presence of such elements, regardless of the character designs or attempted cute aesthetics, often results in a less-than-ideal viewing experience for those sensitive to these themes.

The Supporting Cast

While the main couple may disappoint, the supporting cast, particularly Alan and Jeff, offers a much more enjoyable viewing experience. These characters bring a depth and authenticity to the series that is remarkably absent from the main storyline.

Conclusion

While Pit Babe has its merits, particularly in terms of its supporting characters and some of the underlying themes, the overall execution and reliance on overused tropes make it a series that, in my opinion, has been overrated. The confusing storyline, numerous plotholes, and the genre itself detract from the viewing experience, making it hard for me to recommend the series to others.

For fans of Thai BL series, it's worth reconsidering whether Pit Babe is the right fit for your preferences. Perhaps a fresh look at other series that offer more nuance and originality might be more fulfilling.
