Is Michael Myers Truly Dead in Rob Zombie’s Halloween II?
In Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, 2009, Michael Myers is not definitively dead by the end of the film. The movie concludes with a confrontation between Michael and Laurie Strode resulting in a violent encounter. While Laurie seemingly kills Michael in self-defense, the film leaves some ambiguity regarding his fate. The ending suggests that he could still be alive, consistent with the franchise's tendency to leave room for sequels and potential for his return.
An Uncertain Outcome
I initially thought the same way when I first watched the movie! In the first film, Michael Myers was shot in the face with a Magnum handgun. Yet, he inexplicably recovered in the sequel. This ambiguity is evident in the opening sequence of the second movie, where the Hospital sequence is revealed to be a dream. This cast doubt on the revelation of Michael's death. Could the first movie have been a dream?
When Laurie saw Michael, she thought he was seeing a white horse and experiencing a mental breakdown. I believed the movie would reveal that Laurie was imagining Michael Myers or envisioning herself as Michael in a schizophrenic rage. Why, then, did she see her birth mother if that was Michael's vision?
Box Office Success and Future of the Franchise
If the film did well at the box office, the movies will never stop. Continuity and believability can be disregarded when there is an audience to watch them. Studios will presumably produce more films as long as there is an interest.
As people have already noted, the film made money, so there is likely no end to the Michael Myers saga. That said, it does mark the end of the "real" Michael Myers since it's another attempt to restart the continuity. The original series aimed to gradually make him more supernatural, which many series purists believe is the "real" series with the greatest body of lore and mythology. Long-term fans see only the sequels to the longest continual work as truly mattering.
The Longevity of Michael Myers
Regardless of who controls the rights, some version of Michael Myers will continue until the media dies. I believe he is iconic enough to be used in slasher movies indefinitely. Even as the media expires, people will continue to use Michael Myers in various forms, ensuring his legacy lives on.
