Is It Okay Not to Love Your Parents?

No, it is absolutely NOT okay. Never! This disease where young people hating their parents is a concerning and harmful phenomenon that needs to be addressed. Unless your parents have engaged in extreme forms of torture or abuse, you owe them a basic level of respect and love. Even if you do feel otherwise, never ask for material things like money, phones, or expensive items.

Is Not loving Parents Acceptable?

It is important to recognize that while societal norms dictate a certain level of familial love, there is no law that compels people to love their parents. Hence, it is completely acceptable not to love them.

If you do not love someone, there is a reason behind it - either something your parents did or something you did that led to this feeling. It is entirely normal not to love the people who 'made' you, such as your biological parents.

Facing Parental Disappointment

My parents did everything wrong, and I spent my childhood hating and resenting them. I even felt jealous of my friends who had been adopted into wonderful families. For 18 years, I struggled to escape them and find a sense of normalcy, yet I still love them. Even during my most hateful moments, I couldn't help but feel empathy for them.

They are one of the few constants in my life, and it is hard not to acknowledge them as my parents, despite their mistakes. Nostalgia may play a role, but the truth is, they were the only parents I knew, and that's a bond that's hard to break. They might not have been good parents, but they are your parents. It is an emotional connection that is difficult to get past.

The Responsibility of Family

I love my family, but not in the traditional 'huggy-kissy' way. I feel a strong sense of responsibility towards them, no matter what. Many people, even if they wish otherwise, feel this way about their parents. This responsibility is a natural extension of the familial bond, and can be the very thing that makes it hard to completely not love your parents.

So, is it okay not to love your parents? Yes, on a fundamental level, it is. However, the emotional and psychological impact of not loving them is complex. It is challenging to completely sever these bonds, even in the face of significant disappointment and even abuse.
