Is Disney Done Making Original Movies?

As of August 2023, Disney has not completely stopped making original movies. While the company's recent focus has shifted towards established franchises and sequels, particularly in their animated and live-action divisions, they still produce original content. For example, Disney has released some original films on Disney , and they have plans for more in the future.

Trends in Disney's Film Production

However, the trend has leaned more towards adaptations of existing properties such as live-action remakes of animated classics and sequels to successful films. The landscape of film production is always evolving, so it's worth keeping an eye on Disney's announcements for new projects.

There are still some fairy tales they could explore, such as The Twelve Swans, The Golden Headed Fish, and East of the Sun and West of the Moon. However, it seems unlikely that they have heard of many of these lesser-known stories.

Focus on Established Franchises

Although most of their efforts are focused on mining their owned franchises/brands, e.g., Marvel, Star Wars, Toy Story, and live-action remakes, adapting existing Intellectual Property like The Wrinkle in Time, Nutcracker and the Four Realms and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, Disney is still releasing original movies such as Onward (2020) and Jungle Cruise (2020). However, the only original movie Walt Disney Studios is theatrically releasing this year is Disneynature's Penguins.

Healthy Pipeline of Original Works

Of course, not all is lost in terms of original content. There is a healthy development pipeline of original works in each of the Disney studios. Fans should be happy that Disney is financing remakes and gratuitous sequels because these are highly profitable, giving the studios the breathing room to take on other riskier projects.
