The project's success would hinge on the development of intelligent AI capable of spacecraft self-repair and the ability to find habitable systems, which would require placing the colony ship on a trajectory that could be redirected, if necessary, over those thousands of years. This suggests that we might start planning for such a mission in a few centuries, but we have yet to observe any such systems entering our solar system, leaving us with no close neighbors.
