If You Could Travel Anywhere in the World: A Week in Switzerland or Uganda?
If You Could Travel Anywhere in the World: A Week in Switzerland or Uganda?
Travelling the world without limitations is a dream for many. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or a curious traveler, the thought of exploring a new country with no financial constraints can be incredibly enticing. For me, at 60 with over 30 countries visited, the question remains - where would I choose to go if given a free week?
My Travel Bucket List
For me, Switzerland has long been a dream destination. Filled with stunning landscapes, rich history, and a reputation for extraordinary hospitality, it's been on my bucket list since I was 19 years old. It would be a dream come true to explore its alpine beauty and indulge in its world-class chocolates and cheeses.
Iceland is also a part of my bucket list due to its unique culture and ancient traditions. There is a temple dedicated to Odin, which adds an air of mystery and intrigue to the island. Additionally, I've been fascinated by the ancient faiths and the easy access to natural wonders like waterfalls and geysers.
If I were to choose a closer destination, France is an option, given my son's fluency in French and experience studying there. He could be my guide, offering insights and sharing stories about the country I would otherwise miss.
Around the World or Around the UK?
While these are appealing destinations, the idea of visiting multiple countries in one trip tempts me. The UK is a unique choice, with its rich history and diverse culture. However, I would prioritize not visiting war-torn countries, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.
My first worldwide trip choice in 2018-2020 was Nepal. The distance, danger, and allure of the Himalayas made it the perfect destination. Sadly, the arrival of Covid-19 interrupted these plans. Even with unlimited funding, my current condition makes Nepal a risky choice at present.
7-Day Uganda Adventure
Given my current condition, I would prefer a country where I can safely explore and relax. Uganda is ideal for a 7-day trip, offering a mix of adventure and cultural experiences. Here's how I would spend it:
Day 1: Arrival and Murchison Falls National Park
After arriving at Entebbe International Airport, I would take a transfer to Murchison Falls National Park, stopping by Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary to trek and track the endangered rhinos. The journey would then lead me to my booked lodge, surrounded by nature.
Day 2: Game Drive and Murchison Falls
Early in the morning, I would embark on a game drive, with the chance to spot a variety of animals in their natural habitat, such as antelopes, buffalo, elephants, lions, and leopards. In the afternoon, a hike to the top of Murchison Falls would provide breathtaking views, followed by a boat cruise to the bottom of the falls, which flow into the Nile river.
Day 3: Kibale National Park and Chimpanzee Tracking
Travelling to Kibale National Park, I would prepare for chimpanzee tracking. Known as the primate capital of the world, Kibale hosts a variety of primates, including chimps, colobus monkeys, and vervets. This is also a great opportunity to learn about local communities and their way of life.
Day 4: More Chimpanzee Tracking and Community Visit
Continuing with the chimpanzee tracking, I would spend some time visiting nearby communities, gaining an understanding of their way of life and culture.
Day 5: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
The transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park would be my next step, preparing for a mountain gorilla trekking experience. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to encounter one of the world's most endangered primates.
Day 6: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Community Visit
Trekking and tracking the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat would be a highlight of the trip. After the experience, I would visit nearby communities to learn more about their traditions and way of life.
Day 7: Return to Entebbe
On the final day, I would make the short journey back to Entebbe, bringing the trip to a close with a sense of fulfillment and adventure.
Conclusion
While the idea of exploring exotic and adventurous destinations is appealing, safety and practicality are paramount. A week in Uganda would offer a unique mix of adventure, cultural immersion, and relaxation, making it an ideal choice for my current travel plans.
